I hope to be accepted to your exceptional Community-Based AEGD Program in XXXX Florida to become licensed to practice dentistry in Florida, where I live with my family. While born in the United States, my family is from Yemen, and I was raised and attended school there and in the USA. I am thankful for this since it enabled me to become fully bicultural and bilingual, speak both English and Arabic at the native or near-native level, understand several cultures, and be aware of and empathize with the underserved. I look forward to contributing to the diversity of your program as a dentist from a nation in great need of solidarity from the global oral health community. Given the current political situation of the all-out war, I am afraid to return to Yemen. Still, I dream of returning at some point in the future as a dental missionary once it is safe to do so.
We moved from the USA to Yemen when I was five and stayed there for seven years. I also spent four formative years growing up in Qatar from 1997 through 2001 and Egypt from 2004 through 2011. We live in XXXX County, Florida, USA, and I am thrilled to be here. Now, as a dentist with a great deal of experience and awareness of several Arab countries, Qatar and Egypt, as well as Yemen, I especially look forward to treating immigrants from the Middle East here in Florida who prefer to have a dentist who will care for their oral health needs and educate them in their mother tongue.
I am grateful to have also spent three months in Canada in 2003 and again in 2011 for another two months. My travels have helped me appreciate the interconnected nature of global dentistry and its mission. I also spent two weeks in Syria in 2010, and my heart bleeds for the devastation of this country as it does for Yemen. In both conflicts, the civilians bear the cost, and dentists flee because the oral health care infrastructure is destroyed.
I earned my honorary DDS at the University of Cairo, Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine, in May 2009 and then served for the next five years as a full-time dentist, first in Egypt and then in Yemen. I have mastered a variety of basic dental procedures and have extensive experience in dental emergencies, fixed Prosthodontics, and treating disabled or disabled patients. I was thrilled to work in a small town in Yemen and serve the community as part of a dental team. My employer was a Professor at Sana'a University who made it possible for us to attend to even the most vulnerable community members. We left Yemen for security reasons in 2015. Now, I hope to practice dentistry in Florida.
