Multilingual Dentistry in the Personal Statement

I am an Indian woman dentist who was born and raised in Dubai where I completed high school. I hope to be selected to an Advanced Placement program for International Dentists not only for my ability as a dentist but also my ability to speak six languages fluently, reading and writing in three of them, English, Hindi, and Arabic, opening up worlds of opportunity for service on dental missions to the Global South and helping the underserved closer to home. I also speak Hindi, Malayalam, and Tamil. Helping the underserved is my top priority, especially teaching as many as possible about the importance of oral health and disease prevention. While still in India, my finest moments were serving at at various dental camps and educating about oral health in schools.

While I understand intellectually that a state of physical perfection is unattainable, this is what I strive for every day on an emotional level. I am rarely disappointed with my work, giving my all and maintaining complete harmony of all things in the clinic, I sincerely do everything within my ability to make my patients happy with their dental treatment. I bend over backward and go the extra mile. My effort is well worth it because I find my greatest joy in helping to improve my patients’ lives by empowering their self-confidence. An accomplished multitasking mother, I am accustomed to balancing heavy course loads with other responsibilities. Working as a dental assistant, I stay up to date with the latest technology, such as iTERO and TRIOS. I permanently immigrated to the USA in 2014 after practicing in Chennai and Karnataka, India, as a junior dentist for 4.5 years. I am now a permanent resident of the USA.

“Dentistry is an art” is what my Orthodontist told me when I first met him, before he even had a chance to get a good look at my crooked teeth that were the plaque of my life, the first thing that I thought about in the morning and the last thing that I thought about before falling asleep, after another tormenting day at school. I was sixteen. Thus, I focused on Dentistry to serve mankind, at least in my mind. I simply wanted to pass on the gift that I had been given to those who needed it most. It has been a pleasure to watch the patients happily walk out of my dental office with the smile of their dreams. I thrive on their confidence and trust.

As a mother of 2 children and an immigrant to the USA, I have faced many challenges and obstacles in my journey to become a dentist. Despite these challenges, I am determined to pursue my dream of becoming a dentist, and I am thrilled by the chance to further my education. My experience balancing the demands of motherhood and dentistry has made me a master of time management and the multitasking that is required to excel in Dentistry. In particular, I want to make the most of growing up in Dubai and learning Arabic by sharing stories and concerns with my international colleagues about the many challenges facing Dentistry in the Middle East, particularly for the residents of refugee camps, whose numbers continue to grow in that part of the world.

I have honed my clinical skills with the latest innovative technologies as a dental assistant, gaining a deeper understanding of patient care and comfort. I have also learned the value of teamwork in the dental setting and have developed strong communication and interpersonal skills. I am confident that my passion for dentistry, my commitment to patient care, and my extensive hands-on experience make me a strong candidate for the program.

Thank you for considering my application.
