Korean Endodontist Personal Statement Example

An experienced dentist in my home country, Korea, I hope to be selected to complete an advanced training program in Endodontics and, after gaining further experience in my chosen area, to teach Endodontics to new generations of dental students in my country. At the same time, I look forward to focusing my efforts as much as possible in the area of Community Dentistry with a principal concern for the underserved of South Korea and around the world, instilling in my students a sense of mission that includes the oral health care needs of the global underserved. South Korea has often looked to the United States for leadership and solidarity in the face of challenges to public wellbeing. Now more than ever in the face of COVID-19, I feel honored and most excited by the prospect of greater service - as our countries learn from each other and benefit from each other’s solidarity. 

I very much look forward to returning to an academic environment and the camaraderie that it inspires, building ties that will last a lifetime, sharing one’s profession with like-minded individuals from all over the world, endless discussions of treatment plans and global challenges in Dentistry and exchanging ideas and strategies for different contexts. Nothing excites me as much as this prospect of comparing notes with others who are as dedicated as I am to the cause of the underserved in the Developing World, those most in need from a global perspective.  

A conservative dentist. I try to preserve natural dentition as much as possible and this dovetails very nicely in my mind with my keen desire to give my all to dental education. For me, prevention and treatment are two sides of the same coin, providing care that is as non-invasive as possible and at the same time working to educate patients to save their teeth rather than having them extracted. My experience going on community outreach missions to Haiti as well as Jordan, has helped me to practice compassion and understanding and apply those qualities to the special challenges and opportunities that present themselves in Endodontics. Central to my personal and professional identity is the development of our global understanding and solidarity with those who have the greatest oral health care needs, around the globe. When I am personally unable to go on a mission trip, I try to help out with materials or assist in some supportive role.  

I want to become a master at the art of alleviating pain and discomfort without tooth extraction. I felt very limited as a GP, becoming more and more aware of my own limitations and need for further training in Endodontics, especially a full immersion experience in Apico-surgeries. I am also keenly interested in pulp regeneration and its capacity for saving damaged permanent teeth in pediatric patients. During my GP residency in Maine there were a lot of children that needed endodontic treatment. Even though I did a lot of root canals in adults, I was not entirely comfortable doing so with children. For children, I am especially enthused about a second chance for a tooth.

I could not be more enthused by the fact that well-done Apico surgeries now have outstanding outcomes and I am keenly aware of the fact that they are mostly done by endodontists. I want to be an endodontist who can perform surgical procedures at the cutting-edge, in absolute comfort for patient and dentist alike.

Born in Seoul, South Korea, I came to the USA as a high school student and have remained since then. Thankful to have arrived early enough to become as comfortable professionally in English as I am Korean, I am also devoted to improving my ability to communicate with patients in Spanish. studying Spanish geared specifically towards dental care. I see this as most helpful if not requisite for excellence and leadership in the care of the underserved in today’s America.  

After distinguishing myself in the completion of an Endodontics residency, I look forward to decades to come of full-time practice in this area of dentistry and eventually mentoring new generations of younger dentists in this area. I feel privileged to have the opportunity to dedicate my life to the perfection of our finest level of treatment rather than the ongoing practice of mediocre treatment. I also have the very fond hope of teaching Endodontics at a university at some point in my career. 

I have often lamented that I had to delay two years of preparation in Dentistry for mandatory military service in Korea, serving as a watchman in the DMZ, but it contributed to my cultivation of discipline and I had time to reflect on who I was and how important and central Dentistry is to my life. I am also especially thankful for the opportunity that I had to complete a residency in General Dentistry, as this enabled and empowered my understanding of the importance of referring general dentistry patients to specialists in their area of need. 

I pride myself on being a compassionate dentist and I always do everything that I can to put my patient first and to empathize with them, always putting myself in their shoes. I have long gone that extra mile to participate in outreach programs. Even with the COVID-19 outbreak in full-swing, I continued to volunteer as an on-call doctor seeing emergency patients in need.
