A female dentist from India, I’ve lived in Texas for one year. I hope that this application to your advanced placement program for international dentists might be looked upon with favor. In August 2023 I graduated from ____ University in Chicago, IL with a master’s degree in health informatics. I now seek to put the diverse resources and tools that I have mastered to excellent use in advancing the accessibility and affordability of oral health care for low-income people, here in the USA as well as back home in India. I seek to empower oral health care providers and enhance patient education through the increasingly sophisticated integration of technology, helping us to move toward more equitable and efficient oral health systems. My journey as a dentist has been one of cultural synergy, clinical acumen, and an unwavering drive to help bridge oral health inequities in India and elsewhere, from the busy clinics of India to the cutting-edge landscapes of international dental research.
I grappled with crowded teeth that hindered me from freely expressing joy as an older child – a simple nod became my default response. Despite my mom's persistent insistence on getting braces, I continuously delayed, anticipating pain and doubting any significant change. The topic faded away until my secondary school years when I finally overcame my fear of having a mouth full of wires. After beginning my treatment, my lack of confidence persisted, however, having become deeply ingrained over the years. I continued to refrain from smiling to conceal the wires in my mouth up until the day when they were taken off. I was astonished by the result and vividly recall confidently smiling on the first day, enjoying the compliments from everyone I encountered. On several occasions, I have carefully reflected upon a comparison of pre- and post-treatment pictures.
My choice of Dentistry as a career enabled me to combine what I most love, hands-on healing and the removal of pain and discomfort combined with art and aesthetics – and contributing to technological advancement and its application. I crave the connection with people, making profoundly important and sustainable contributions to people’s lives. In dental school, I explored the expansive field of aesthetic dentistry. A watershed moment occurred during my final year in my pedodontics rotation, when I undertook a restorative procedure for a child with autism. From that patient forward, I have developed a special fondness for special needs children, especially those with autism. These children and the profound challenge that they represent stole my heart. When I daydream about practicing in America, I daydream about them.
After completing dental school in India I practiced dentistry for over a year before embarking on a new chapter in the USA. Earning my MHI degree in Chicago was another critical milestone in my trajectory because it will enable me to keep making the USA my second home while I put my informatics degree to work on behalf of India’s underserved – most of the population.
Oral health information systems can track patient records, treatment outcomes, and public health initiatives. By collecting and analysing data, we can identify the needs of underserved communities tailor interventions accordingly. Iformation systems that capture data from clinics, community health workers, and school,s can provide insights for targeted interventions. Remote expert dental programs allow specialists to remotely guide local providers in diagnosing and treating oral health issues. This approach can bridge gaps in access to specialized care, especially in underserved areas. Expanding telehealth services and training local providers to use these systems can improve access to expert advice and enhance patient care. Integrating health informatics training into dental curricula can empower future practitioners to address oral health disparities. Informatics-driven research can identify effective interventions for underserved populations. Encouraging research collaborations, data sharing, and evidence-based guidelines can improve oral health outcomes. Leveraging health informatics can empower dental professionals, enhance data-driven decision-making, and ultimately improve oral health outcomes for underserved communities in India.
My mother taught me that perseverance and hard work can move mountains. Earning the master’s degree in Health informatics opened my eyes to the pivotal role technology plays in shaping and enhancing the overall function of healthcare. I now also fully engaged with the intricate dynamics between technological advancement and the seamless orchestration of healthcare processes.
I am actively engaged in volunteer work with 'Conversations to Remember,' an organization dedicated to alleviating the sense of isolation among senior citizens. Their core mission revolves around ensuring that the elderly do not feel lonely and are provided with a platform to freely express themselves. Volunteer work holds a profound significance in my life because I see contributing selflessly to underserved individuals and communities as an integral part of our profession. Fostering connection and making a positive impact on the well-being of others are intrinsic to my joy in life.
My traditional Indian parents initially responded negatively about my career direction and continued to oppose me – because I am female, until they realized that I was going to do it with or without their blessing.
The educational heights I aspire to reach and the impactful contributions I envision making throughout my professional journey depend on my being selected for an International Dentist Program. Being chosen for your program would not just be a source of pride for me and my family; it would also serve as a testament to the belief that perseverance can indeed move mountains.
I am eager to channel my dedicated efforts, contribute wholeheartedly, and finally satiate my hunger to fully enter our profession on a global level. I am eager to channel my dedicated efforts, contribute wholeheartedly, and fulfil the deep-seated passion that has fuelled my journey. I eagerly anticipate dedicating my professional endeavours to the study, exploration, and practice of dentistry and oral healthcare. I am committed to addressing the needs of diverse populations from all walks of life, helping to ensure comprehensive and inclusive oral health services.
International Dentist Personal Statement

What makes this statement especially striking is the way it weaves together personal history, professional evolution, and a clear vision for the future. The narrative doesn’t feel like a checklist of accomplishments; it reads as the journey of someone who has been shaped—deeply and authentically—by lived experience, cultural identity, and a genuine desire to expand access to oral health care. There is a strong sense of purpose running through the entire piece, and that purpose is grounded in both empathy and intellect.
One of the most powerful elements is the early story about orthodontic treatment. It is intimate without being sentimental, and it provides a meaningful emotional anchor for the reader. It shows that the applicant’s understanding of dentistry is…
