Surgeons in blue scrubs operate under bright lights. "Emergency" sign glows red. A nurse runs with X-rays, creating a tense, urgent mood.
Fast paced OMFS Residency, Personal Statement Service

I will earn my DMD Degree from the ____ ____ School of Dental Medicine at ____ University next May 2023. I am proud of my GPA of 3.99 and my rank of third in the class. I hope to begin a residency position in OMFS in 2024 at ____ University. I love ____; born and raised, I hope to be selected for the residency program in OMFS at ____.

Reconstructive craniofacial surgery is my life. I hope to soon be uniquely positioned to help victims of traffic accidents and gunshot wounds to the head to survive and thrive after reconstructive surgery. I am thrilled by what OMFS can do to help them, which I see as something of a miracle. I look forward to practicing and teaching at a university-affiliated hospital for decades to come, where I will have the opportunity to make my mark through OMFS practice, research, and teaching. I also look forward to going on regular mission trips to disaster areas with many traumatic wounds to the head.

The world shows no evidence of becoming a more peaceful place – quite the reverse - and firearms continue to be manufactured and sold with much greater efficiency than infant formula. I will have a lot of work to do. Still 26, I look forward to a long lifetime getting up before sunrise each day to do what I can for about 12 hours to pick up the pieces. Most recently, I have begun to investigate the support that is being offered by OMFS to Ukrainian soldiers who have survived traumatic head wounds. I want to prepare myself to help.

My first one-week rotation in oral surgery (February of D3) was my watershed moment, my epiphany, especially OMFS. A gifted child with no dentists or doctors in my family and needing little dental care, I sometimes think I chose my profession because it seemed the most complex and challenging of the various options. I adore a good challenge. In this same way, OMFS is a logical choice for my specialization. I cannot imagine myself in any other area.

Since my graduation, I have assisted OMFS residents and surgeons weekly in the OR to get more exposure and experience. I will be completing a one-week OMFS elective externship at ____ University this July 2022. Excited to spend more time in the OR and get additional hands-on experience, I am becoming acquainted with the residents, faculty, and day-to-day activities. I attended the 4th annual "Women in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Leadership Symposium" in March (on Zoom), which was incredibly inspiring. I participated in leadership-building activities and made meaningful connections with other OMFS professionals. I worked as a dental assistant at ___)_ University for one year between college and dental school. We visited public schools in underserved communities around the Greater ____ area, doing dental screenings, applying fluoride, and placing dental sealants on children’s teeth. Another highlight was the "Greater ____ Stand Down" – an annual event that enables Veterans to receive immediate, comprehensive, and coordinated services in one place (dental, medical, housing, wellness services, etc.). I distributed oral hygiene products and performed dental screenings and referrals.

My first patient as a student dentist was a blind, middle-aged, African-American woman with a service dog and an extensive medical history including sexual assault. Her file indicated that she was rude and abusive with a potential for violence. I was scared stiff. It went badly, requiring that her appointment be rescheduled; me and my colleagues, at first, were thoroughly cursed out. We left together, walking in the direction of her transportation and finding a place to sit and talk, calming her, supplicating, begging her for a chance. After nearly an hour, she apologized and promised me that she would continue with the necessary treatment and she did. She remained convinced that I was her friend. This is what I gave because this is what it took.

I serve as a Teaching Assistant in the pre-clinical simulation lab for second-year dental school students in a fixed prosthodontics course. When I am not doing Dentistry, I am outdoors exercising. I am competitive at soccer, for which I served as Team Captain in my senior year and was awarded the Boston Globe’s All-Scholastic Player of the Year Award in 2014. Among a variety of events that I support at least once a year, I am certain to never miss the Run for Wounded Vets, for whom I shall always go that extra mile.

Thank you for considering my application to OMFS at Boston University.
