My Path to Pediatric Dentistry

Originally from Iran, I am a dentist currently completing my DDS degree in the United States. My career has focused on advancing in Endodontics, and I am eager to secure a residency position in this field. I aspire to join a program that values diversity and multilingual dentistry. Having a Farsi speaker on the Pediatric Dentistry team would be beneficial, as Farsi is increasingly spoken in North America. I am passionate about providing dental care to children, especially those from immigrant and refugee backgrounds, particularly those with Iranian heritage.

Early Experiences in Dentistry

During my time as a periodontist in Iran, I encountered many unique cases. One of my early experiences involved treating a 10-year-old girl with progressive recession on her lower anterior teeth. She was referred from the Orthodontics department. Her medical history included Prader-Willi Syndrome, which was evident in her cognitive and behavioral challenges. Despite her fear, I successfully eased her anxiety and completed the treatment.

I have cherished treating pediatric patients with special needs, ranging from simple to advanced procedures. In the future, I aim to assist families with limited access to oral healthcare for their special needs children. Education and preventive care are crucial for maintaining good oral health. I intend to use my dental expertise to enhance the quality of life for these families.

Growing Passion for Pediatric Dentistry

My passion for pediatric dentistry has steadily grown over the years. I have found joy and fulfillment in positively impacting others' lives. Treating children with mental and physical disabilities at Penn Dental Medicine has revealed the depth of my personal humility. My patients inspire me, showing me that my struggles are minor compared to theirs. They face challenges with courage and determination.

Pediatric dentists must provide excellent care to patients from all backgrounds. My goal is to work both in private practice and at a hospital. I believe that every child deserves access to quality dental care, regardless of their circumstances.

Commitment to Community and Education

In my eight years as a general dentist and periodontist, I have held onto my dream of making a community impact while enhancing my skills as an educator and healthcare provider. I have treated many children for various dental and surgical procedures. I am confident in facing challenges during my pediatrics residency. My life experiences have taught me compassion, flexibility, and resilience as a team player.

My desire to pursue a pediatric dental residency is driven by a commitment to service. Through pediatric dentistry, I am dedicated to teaching children healthy habits, supporting their self-care progress, and fostering pride and confidence in their oral health and appearance.

The Importance of Continuous Learning

I recognize that providing quality healthcare requires ongoing education. This is why I stay informed about emerging trends and developments in pediatric dentistry. I am excited about my work every day. Pediatric Dentistry demands fulfilling significant needs, dedication, communication, teamwork, and persistence. My strong dedication and persistence will serve me well.

Teamwork is crucial, as patients often have multiple factors affecting their treatment. I am prepared to exceed expectations, dedicating my full energy to the reputation and advancement of Pediatric Dentistry.

Looking Forward to Residency

I am completing the IDP at UPenn this year, 2023, and I am eager to pursue a residency in Pediatric Dentistry. I believe I will be able to excel and stand out in your program. After becoming a dentist in my home country, I completed an Advanced Education Preceptorship Program in General Dentistry and earned a Master’s in Periodontics. While I have a deep appreciation for Periodontics, my passion for children drives me to dedicate my career to Pediatric Dentistry.

Gratitude and Future Aspirations

I am grateful to all my teachers, mentors, and role models whose strength and vision have empowered and inspired me. I feel indebted to them and to America. I am eager to give back and express my deep gratitude.

In conclusion, my journey in dentistry has been shaped by my experiences and aspirations. I am committed to making a difference in the lives of children through pediatric dentistry. I look forward to the opportunity to contribute to the field and support the next generation of dental patients.

What stands out most in this statement is the unmistakable sense of calling that runs through it. This is not simply a dentist pivoting toward a new specialty; it is someone whose professional identity has been shaped by years of caring for vulnerable children, navigating complex medical and behavioral needs, and finding deep personal meaning in those encounters. The narrative feels grounded in lived experience rather than aspiration alone, which gives it credibility and emotional weight.

The applicant’s background as a periodontist in Iran adds a distinctive dimension. The story of treating a young girl with Prader–Willi Syndrome is especially effective—not because it is dramatic, but because it reveals the applicant’s calm, patient-centered approach, cultural sensitivity, and ability to build…
