Indian Community in Chicago in the Personal Statement for Dental Schoool

Born and raised in an Indian immigrant community in Chicago Illinois was challenging, and taught me to be devoted to my studies, since learning did not require money, and I was most keen to advance my awareness of the world. Oral health care not being a top priority in low-income immigrant communities, by the time I entered adolescence I was aware of the tragic consequences of its neglect. Few of us ever saw a dentist, preventive dental care and healthy diet were seldom discussed, and many if not most people, of all ages, had rotten teeth.

I hope to be selected to dental school because of my passion for service to my community, especially Indian immigrants to America, and particularly those with whom I share the Gujarati language, an Indian language spoken by nearly one million people in North America. I look forward to contributing to the diversity of your program as a multilingual Indian man from an immigrant family who feels a keen sense of responsibility to his people and feels called to service as a dentist because I see it as the most effective and sustainable way to give back to my community. Helping the underserved is for me the epitome of noble work, my spirituality, civic expression, and social contribution.

Growing up with limited access to essential healthcare as a child of Indian immigrants from a small village, I know firsthand how it affects people’s lives. I take pride in my dedication to my career vision, with compassion and community service as the pillars of my future. My parents' sense of helplessness as they attempted to navigate the US healthcare system was central to some of my earliest and most formative memories. Observing my parents struggle for dental care continues to inspire and drive me forward until this day. I have daydreamed since childhood of someday serving as an advocate for my people and treating them with empathy and kindness, lending them a helping hand.

While earning my BS Degree in Biochemistry at ____ University (2016), I volunteered at free health clinics, further confirming my dedication to healthcare and dentistry. Whether explaining a new medicine, offering the comfort of a hearing ear, or offering advice on managing side effects, I was delighted with my unofficial role. During this time, I co-founded SOLH, a nonprofit organization that works to mitigate the effects of healthcare inequities in ____. In our first project, we prepared and distributed more than 140 healthcare care packages—which included over-the-counter drugs, personal hygiene items, and educational materials—to a nearby soup kitchen.

Earning my MS Degree, also in Biochemistry. at ____ College in Medical Science (2018) has provided me with an excellent launch pad for a career in dentistry with a solid foundation in the natural sciences and an advancing understanding of healthcare systems. My participation in U__ Medical Education Development (MED) Program provided me with an excellent opportunity to gain practical clinical experience and exercise leadership skills. My research work as a Visiting Scholar at the National Institute of Environmental Health Studies further honed my ability to analyze complex health issues and collaborate effectively with healthcare professionals.

By the time that I began volunteering at a care clinic hosted by UNC Chapel Hill's Dental School, Dentistry had stolen my heart. This clinic provides free dental care to those in need in the community. Dr. ____, the director of the clinic, is my foremost mentor and role model. I observed numerous dental students not much older than I performing various dental procedures and I watched dozens of patients, who normally would not have access to this level of dental care, leave pain free and with smiles they could be proud of. These clinics are not only vital to providing preventative care, but also informing the community about how important dental health is to one's overall well-being. It is tragic that this is so often overlooked in many underprivileged communities for a variety of complex reasons. As a result of my volunteer work and clinical experiences, I have learned to empathize with patients and communicate effectively with them.

I seek to honor my parents by working to correct disparities in access to healthcare and create a system that is accessible, uplifting, and kind to everyone who walks through the door, receiving the care and understanding they deserve.
