My Journey Towards Orthodontics Residency: A Personal Statement

Orthodontics Residency Personal Statement

I hope to be selected for a residency program in Orthodontics primarily based on my great passion for attending to the oral health needs of special needs individuals. I am not only an experienced US-trained dentist but also a certified occupational therapist. As an occupational therapist, I have learned many valuable lessons that I look forward to sharing with my peers in your residency program. This is particularly relevant when discussing orthodontics for special needs individuals. For family reasons, my first choice is the ____ University School of Orthodontics.


My Educational Background


I earned my DDS at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2005. My intense admiration for design and engineering inspired my passion for orthodontics, especially the mechanics of uniquely shaped brackets and wires designed for controlled tooth movement. Over the years, I have spent significant time shadowing a well-respected family orthodontic practice that provides SFOT and MARPE treatment in concert with Invisalign. I also engage in discussions with my younger brother, who recently completed an Orthodontics residency.


I celebrated my dental school graduation with my family. The five of us shared dinner, and we had so much to be thankful for. Four out of five of us are dental professionals: my dad is an endodontist, my mom is a hygienist, and my younger brother is in dental school. That evening, my older brother, who recently completed a residency in osteopathic medicine, made a toast welcoming his younger sister to the ‘real world.’ He encouraged me to be ‘confident and bold as life and my new title would demand it.’ Life felt incredibly bright. However, nine years later, I found myself fighting for my life.


Overcoming Challenges


I dedicated myself to dentistry for years, often neglecting my own health in the process. I suffered from occupational stress and infertility despite treatment. Additionally, I endured a major familial disruption, a hysterectomy, and a double mastectomy, from which I fully recovered. I adopted a child, reconnected with my family, and became a certified pediatric occupational therapist.


My full recovery and my studies in occupational therapy have inspired me to apply for a residency in Orthodontics. I have acquired an elevated understanding of the sensory needs of children and strategies to meet those needs. My central research interests include the activity of feeding, the activity of sleep, and orofacial myology. Increasingly, I find myself reading about airway-centric dentistry, epigenetics, the work of Dr. Felix Liao, Sandra Holtzman, the Buteyko Breathing Method, and the troubles associated with tethered oral tissues.


Being selected for your residency program will mean that I have snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, in the words of Winston Churchill. I will return to my first love, stronger and better prepared to give everything to the children and adolescents who most need my help. I possess the qualities and skills necessary to be a highly successful orthodontic resident and practicing orthodontist.


Advanced Education and Clinical Experience


I completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency. The residency director was a phenomenal leader, and my confidence and clinical capabilities expanded greatly. I practiced embracing challenges, new techniques, and technology within my community. I also came to understand my mentor’s favorite words of wisdom by Maya Angelou: “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” He inspired me to live accordingly.


I went on to practice with the Cherokee Nation. My passion for service to the underserved made me an excellent fit for providing critical services for Native American patients in an area with a high level of poverty and limited access to health care. I enjoy taking a holistic approach to health care and took time during our busy clinical schedule to listen to patients and connect them with specialty dental care, primary care, and behavioral health as needed. I enhanced my organizational skills by completing timely post-operative follow-ups and making referrals. While providing care, I have learned to convey maximum respect and sensitivity to my patients and colleagues.


The Art of Operative Dentistry


Chair-side, I have most enjoyed the art of operative dentistry. Designing tooth preparations and restorations feels much like painting, a passion I have long enjoyed. My elevated dexterity, fascination with dental anatomy, and advanced knowledge of materials allow me to contour restorations to the unique needs and concerns of my patients. As I have gained clinical experience, I have especially enjoyed providing colleagues with a second opinion on how to best resolve challenging issues in Orthodontics.


The Future of Orthodontics


As I look towards the future, I am excited about the possibilities that lie ahead in my orthodontic career. I envision a practice where I can integrate my diverse background in dentistry and occupational therapy to provide comprehensive care for my patients. I aim to advocate for those with special needs, ensuring they receive the orthodontic care they deserve.


In conclusion, my journey has been filled with challenges and triumphs. I am eager to bring my unique perspective and skills to your residency program. I believe that my experiences have equipped me with the resilience and determination necessary to excel in the field of orthodontics. I look forward to the opportunity to contribute to the advancement of orthodontic care and to make a meaningful impact on the lives of my patients.


I am committed to lifelong learning and professional growth. I am excited about the prospect of collaborating with esteemed faculty and fellow residents who share my passion for orthodontics. Together, we can explore innovative approaches and contribute to the field's ongoing evolution.
