Prosthodontics is the center of my world and I hope to be selected for a residency program in Prosthodontology based on my professional passion and dedication to the profession, especially helping the underserved. I thrive on diversity in prosthodontics and look forward to treating patients of many different backgrounds and health conditions, at home in America and on mission trips abroad. Â
Â
As a 4th year dental student at __U, I am preparing myself for residency by gaining hands-on experience with various prosthodontic treatments. I have been working with faculty members to gain a deeper understanding of the materials, techniques, and best practices that will help me become a successful prosthodontist. I have also been participating in clinical sessions to hone my skills in implant placement, full mouth hybrid, vertical collapse of occlusion, and full mouth crown/veneer placement.
Â
I first earned a BBA at the University of Alabama and then spent an additional year of study in the physical sciences back home in Texas (UNT) in preparation for dental school. Next, I began a two-year bridge MS program at __U which I never finished because I was accepted to dental school.
I have been serving full-time in our clinic since May of 2023. I began lab work in our first semester, August 2020, and have taken courses in prosthodontics, restorative dentistry, endodontics, cosmetic dentistry, oral surgery, and periodontics. Our program is part of the vanguard in cosmetic dentistry with CAD/CAM machines and in-house crown milling. We have even begun to digitalize dentures, though I have not gotten the chance to do this yet myself.
Â
I worked especially hard to become fluent in Spanish for the purposes of Dentistry because helping the underserved is integral to my sense of dignity and central to the great joy and fulfillment that I find in social service. I began gaining supervised experience at HANDS of St. Lucie serving uninsured patients from February to April of 2023, two days a week, delivering emergency dental care and developing emergency treatment plans with same-day treatment. I have also served at Cypress Creek Clinic in Ft. Lauderdale. FL, providing care to patients with HIV. Here, I have learned to excel at designing and modifying treatment plans based on complex medication lists and medical histories. At NSU Dental Clinic in Davie, where I have served since May 2023, I have practiced chairside manner and perfected cultural sensitivity in the service of an extremely diverse patient population, I have particularly enjoyed helping to develop treatment plans for complex cases as part of a team.
Â
My dream is to have a Prosthodontics practice in a low-income area of the inner city, where I can welcome everyone that walks through the door. From the first time that I referred a patient in our school's clinic to a prosthodontic specialist, I have had a profound passion to go the extra mile and receive the education required so that I could also treat complex prosthodontics cases. Assisting at several different clinics has helped me to better understand the needs of the community that I serve. I have seen firsthand the vast needs of ordinary people in the inner-city neighborhoods where I live and work.
Â
I am passionate about making a difference in my community and leading by example. If selected for a residency in prosthodontics, I will be able to provide specialized care to those with great need, radically improving the lives of my patients.
Â
My inherent, natural love for people inspired my calling to Prosthodontics. I have spent a great deal of time in our community outreach clinics providing mostly emergency care to the uninsured and have had the enormous privilege of going on missions to Honduras and Costa Rica. As a traveling volunteer, I have visited almost forty countries on every continent but Antarctica. My big takeaway has been how much dental care can change someone's life for the better and how appreciative people are of a chance to receive that care. I have also spent a total of six months in Africa, opening my eyes to the enormity of the world while I noted the common elements of humanity that we all share.
Thank you for considering my application.
