I hope to be chosen for an AEGD residency with a strong Endodontics program, driven by my dedication to using endodontics as a means of serving the community through oral health education and treatment. I am inclined towards conservative dentistry as it aligns with my nature and philosophy of oral health care, and most passionate about preserving natural teeth while restoring their function.
The beginning of my journey was as a patient experiencing pain from an infected tooth next to a mesially impacted tooth. A dentist offered to perform a root canal to save the infected tooth. This treatment not only relieved my pain but also allowed me to keep the tooth, rather than losing it along with the impacted one. Endodontic treatment restored my oral function and highlighted the singular importance of dentistry, particularly endodontics.
I chose this career to make a significant impact on the community. I never tire of alleviating my patients' pain and discomfort, enhancing their lives in lasting ways, or of transforming painful expressions into warm, relaxed, and confident smiles. My commitment to preserving patients' natural dentition while relieving their pain and restoring full function is central to my oral health philosophy.
After completing my pre-clinical endo module, I joined the Endo Literature Study Club at my school. This inspired me to delve into the endodontology literature and deepen my understanding of clinical practices. I also had the opportunity to contribute to research projects in endodontics and other dental fields.
I realized early on the need for more training in general dentistry before specializing in endodontics. The decision to save a tooth involves many considerations, prompting me to pursue an AEGD program before advanced endodontic training. During my 3rd and 4th years of dental school, my commitment to endodontics was reinforced through clinical endo practice. I performed several root canal treatments on incisors, premolars, and molars. Clinical endo taught me humility, and Dr. ____, my mentor, often reminded me that “Endo is finesse.”
Completing an AEGD residency is a crucial complement to my dental education. It will equip me to handle medically complex cases with the confidence that comes with experience, preparing me well for lifelong study and practice in endodontics. I will gain a deeper understanding of how endodontics is rooted in general dentistry and acquire more endo experience, particularly in restoring treated teeth. This will enhance my grasp of restorability and the role of endodontics in a patient’s overall treatment plan.
My dental education at ____ University has inspired and prepared me for a long and distinguished career in dentistry, beginning with excellence in general dentistry and progressing to endodontics. I hope that by first becoming an exceptional general dentist, I will establish a foundation for a future as a distinguished endodontist.
I thrive in my deep study of the evolution of endodontics, evidence-based dentistry, and serving underserved communities, preparing to become a high energy member of the dental community. Thank you for considering my application to join your esteemed and competitive AEGD program.
