  • Iranian International Dentist Pediatric Experience

Growing up in a family of five physicians, I was taught to strive for excellence in everything I did. When I was about ten, my younger brother had serious tooth pain one day, and my mother and I took him to the dentist. As I looked around the dentistry room, like any curious child would, I saw all the dental equipment around me and was impressed by how much I enjoyed seeing this high technology and marveled at the importance of its use. I have always loved the artistic side of everything, and seeing how the dentist would work on my brother’s teeth amused me and left me hungry to learn more about dentistry. This motivated me to strive and excel in the area that would be six years of constant studying and dedication after completing high school and taking Iran's national university entrance examination, competing with almost 500,000 other applicants. By placing among the top 0.1%, I was accepted into one of the high-ranked dental schools in my country, Ahvaz University of Medical Sciences. My exceptional passion for dentistry and hard studying enabled me to achieve the first rank on the Basic Medical Exam at the end of the second year of nationwide dentistry programs. I graduated from dental school with honors, first in my class, and a GPA of 3.84. I then started working at the Health Center of XXXX, a small and underdeveloped city in the southern part of the country. In my free time, I helped the underserved people of this city and the surrounding rural area as a volunteer dentist. Providing various oral health treatments with minimum equipment made me stronger, more confident, and more experienced in working under challenging situations. This experience was most difficult, and it served to advance my personal and career development while providing critical assistance to those who came to me for treatment. Along with increasing clinical experience, I realized that I love to work with children. This motivated me to become a Pediatric Dentist and be able to help children feel better and rid them of their dental pains. I spent one year again studying for another exam that led to me being accepted into the Pediatric Dentistry residency program at XXXX University of Medical Sciences in hopes that I could go back and work for the children in my area. In addition to my time as a clinic dentist, I taught dentistry at XXXX University of Medical Sciences as an assistant professor. I provided immediate and constructive feedback to students individually and as a group, teaching them how to assess patients effectively and handle dental emergencies. Analyzing the effectiveness of our efforts in clinical settings, we always strove to improve our program outcomes, and this was an integral part of the instruction that I was providing as well as what I was learning from my mentors – constantly collaborating with other instructors to implement best practices for the enhancement of student learning. Working as a Dentist, treating more than seven thousand dental patients, has been the best period of my professional life – free and fulfilled, which was interrupted by making America my new home. I have no regrets since America is vastly superior to where I came from regarding long-term, sustainable opportunities. Once I earn my doctoral degree here in America, I look forward to continuing to give my all to a residency position in Pediatric Dentistry. To maintain my involvement in dentistry as I transitioned to the U.S., I volunteered as a Dental Assistant at XXXX Family Dental in XXXX, Georgia. As my career progresses here in the USA, I hope to assist the underserved increasingly. My heart has always gone out to those patients who suffer throughout their lives due to not having had access to adequate dental care during their formative years. Friends and colleagues have told me for years that my personable nature makes me a natural for the specialty I have chosen to cultivate, helping dental patients feel comfortable. A lifetime of striving to improve my hand-eye coordination has rendered my hands most deft and capable. I could not be more committed to studying the long-term effects of procedures on oral health. Efficient in using dental equipment and systems, my practiced manual talent matches my focused observational and analytical skills in Dentistry. I hope to be chosen based on my great passion for dentistry and the fact that I am extremely hard working with a positive attitude and someone who is most dedicated to her field. Throughout my practice. As a dentist, I continued to read widely in the literature, weekly if not daily, to stay abreast of developments in my field. I look forward to continuing to do so for the rest of my professional life. Thank you for considering my application. • Residency Pediatric Dentistry Personal Statement

Until I graduated from dental school, I was fully immersed in general dentistry. I had not yet settled on any specialty to which I had developed a commitment. I did have an initial, extraordinary passion for Orthodontics since I have always particularly enjoyed reading about the rapidly evolving technologies and their applications in this area of dentistry. My special love for children has also driven my thinking. My full embrace of Pediatric Dentistry began when I accepted a full-time position as a General Dentist in a clinic that served only children eleven years ago. I moved to the USA in December of 2000, shortly after graduating from dental school in Medellin, Colombia. I was hoping to be selected for a residency program in Orthodontics. I managed to become a Dental Assistant within a brief period, and I was excited to be working in my field and learning much about how dentistry is practiced in the USA. I volunteered to visit elementary schools with other dental assistants to teach students about oral health care and good hygiene. I was thrilled to see smiles on the students’ little faces upon receiving their new toothbrushes. After a few years of service as a Dental Assistant and studying around the clock, I became licensed to practice Dental Hygiene in the State of Florida and did so for the next three years, which were among the happiest and most fulfilling years of my life. I was immediately enthralled with the contact with the patients, which is what I had been craving. After passing the NBDE with excellence, I was accepted into the Program for International Dentists at the University of XXXX, earning my doctoral degree in Dentistry in December 2008. I started working at XXXX General Dentistry for Kids in March 2009. This was the first day of the rest of my life. The most salient factor in my decision to accept and continue in this position for 11 years has been my dedication to children's oral health, mainly because 95% of our patients are Medicaid-insured. Over the last decade, I have become increasingly engaged with the children of families with scarce resources. Nothing else is as important as advancing my career in this area. The children I care for are from some of the humblest families in our community with great need of support and attention, typically from prominent families in communities of recent immigrants. Every day I wake up and start thinking of what I will say to these children to win their confidence and fully address their oral health issues. I thank God that my first language is Spanish. I will never forget the day I placed NuSmile crowns on the four anterior teeth of a 3-year-old a decade ago. That afternoon, upon picking up my daughter, she told me about a boy in her class showing off his brand-new front teeth. As I dropped her off the following day, I heard a little voice trying to catch my attention. As I turned my head, I saw my patient from the day before smiling at me and waving his hand, his joy, the profound sense of pride in my daughter’s eyes, and my sense of contribution to the community. In 2017, we moved to Tampa, Florida; a month later, I started working at a Pediatric office, and over the last two years, working alongside colleagues who have the degree that I also want has resulted in this petition asking to be selected for a residency program in Pediatric Dentistry. In June 2019, I finally decided to start my practice, accepting only patients under eighteen. I have managed to become independent and master the business side of a dental clinic. I have eleven years of experience as a general dentist caring for children's oral health, primarily for little Latinos. I hope to have now the opportunity to advance to the forefront of my field of dentistry as a resident in your program. In this way, I will have the state-of-the-art training that I need so that my clinic can make its maximum contribution to our community, society, and profession. I look forward to long hours on my feet caring for children, especially those who are very shy, at best, in English. Thank you for considering my application. • Orthodontics Residency Personal Statement Missions

I graduated second in my class from Universidad Nacional San Luis Gonzaga de Ica in Peru in 2008. Upon graduating, I gained over seven years of clinical experience in private and government public clinics serving as a general dentist. I also continued my studies, in orthodontics, to enhance my professional knowledge, searching for the specialty I wanted to focus on. As an Indigenous woman dentist originally from Latin America, earning a doctoral degree in the USA was a remarkable accomplishment in my professional dental career. With advanced training in Orthodontics lying ahead, I am thrilled with how my firmest dreams are taking flight. I began focusing on Orthodontics as my area of specialization shortly after I started dental school in Peru. When I finished dental school, I was convinced that Orthodontics would be my destiny. In Peru, I made a lot of removable and mixed dentitions, Hawley arches and Interproximal Reductions. I took postgraduate orthodontics classes; one year of fixed orthodontics techniques, four months of malocclusion planning and treatment, and five months of evidence-based straight arch technique approaches. I finished ortho treatment with the edgewise process, MBT, and Roth prescription brackets with faculty supervision as part of my course requirements. Students were allowed to attend the postgraduate clinic until their cases were complete. In private practice, I took on simple orthodontic cases with the hope of taking on more complex cases as my experience and knowledge grew. My acceptance into the International Dentist Program at XXXX University was a humbling experience. At once, I found a new appreciation for how dentistry was practiced back home in Peru and quickly realized the intensity of the XXU dental program. I was thrilled at the opportunity to refresh my dental knowledge and learn to refresh new things. Upon completing a residency program in Orthodontics, I hope to begin my private practice in Orthodontics, which I look forward to balancing with family life in increasingly creative ways that gradually allow me to incorporate community service for the underserved, helping marginalized communities in the USA as well as Peru. I have witnessed how life-changing a functional, symmetrical, and beautiful smile can be. The impact this creates, especially in the life of a young person still developing self-esteem and confidence, is crucial. As I come to the end of my program for international dentists, the experiences that I have had only continue to confirm my passion for orthodontics. Recently, as part of my social service, I had the privilege of attending to people in rural areas in VA, close to the Appalachian regions. As part of my social service, I recently helped to provide essential oral health for the community. I was reminded of the time I spent working in the Andes of Peru, where I sometimes had to walk 8 hours to reach an isolated village of the underserved. My work has taught me perseverance, commitment, and resilience. Also, as part of Christian services in Jamaica, I had the privilege of attending to patients and performing several complex treatments. I was grateful for the opportunity to demonstrate my skills and humbled to be asked. Mission work is central to my identity, and I look forward to participating in various missions in the future. In Peru, during the earthquake of 2007, I served as part of a group that helped in the aftermath. These were, for me, foundational memories that I will carry for a lifetime. One day, I will return to my native Peru, where I can practice orthodontics in my native Quechua, the most common language in Latin America's underserved populations, if not the world. My extended visits to Chile and Ecuador have enhanced my appreciation for diversity in dentistry. I have had momentous experience serving the oral health needs of various social or economic classes, cultures, and backgrounds. I am especially pleased that being a native Spanish speaker will allow me to help Spanish speakers as a resident. I thank you for considering my application to an Orthodontics residency program. • Indian International Dentist Advanced Standing Underserved

I hope to be selected to complete your competitive Advanced Standing Program for International Dentists based on my passion for dentistry, especially pediatric dentistry, my record of accomplishment as an extremely hard worker dedicated to lifelong education and advancement in my field, and especially my devotion to the cause of helping the underserved. I want to distinguish myself in your program as someone who does their best to think about dentistry and the significant needs in oral health care – from a global perspective. I look forward to giving increasingly copious amounts of my time to help the underserved. This is where my heart is, which brings me the greatest joy, fulfilling my need to serve my community and maximize my contribution to society in this vital area. Children in need of dental care who do not have access because of financial considerations are something that I find deeply troubling. I hope to open my own Pediatric Dentistry clinic as I progress in my career, with the door open to those needy children and their families that cannot afford care—being there for as many as possible in my professional life, doing the greatest good for my community. I was born and raised in Andhra Pradesh, a rural region in the South of India. This helps explain why I have aspired to become a doctor since childhood. I remember the day I promised my Grade 1 teacher I would become a doctor. My only focus ever since has been to become a doctor. In time, my passion focused on dentistry as the path where I could make my maximum contribution to health care in this most central and vital of areas. I will never forget my first class in dental school, taught by an Oral Pathologist, Dr. XXXX. He helped me understand and appreciate the grandeur and value of dentistry in everyday life. His class was most inspiring and doubled my efforts to become the best dentist possible. After graduation, I began practicing dentistry at Dr. XXXX's Dentocare in Nandyal, my hometown. Most of my patients were from the countryside, and many of them, if not most, were illiterate. I had the opportunity during this period to treat hundreds, if not thousands, especially since I went on to serve as a junior dentist at a public hospital for two years. I moved to the USA early in 2017 and began almost immediately preparing to restart my career in Dentistry here in America. Completing several continuing education courses kept me engaged and learning. A particular highlight had the opportunity to attend the Yankee Dental Conference held in Boston in January 2019, where I learned many valuable things about emerging innovations and their applications. I got the chance to shadow a dentist in 2019, Dr. XXXX, at Harbor House, Inc. in Nashua, NH. This experience helped me better understand the vast difference between how dentistry is practiced here in America compared to India. I have much to learn to develop my skills and knowledge base, discover the latest techniques, and thoroughly examine the issues on the forefront of Dentistry as practiced in the USA. Still, I am starting with a solid command of conservative and pediatric dentistry (pulpotomy, pulpectomy) and endodontics. I want to become a pediatric dentist and am incredibly excited to learn about dental lasers and autogenous tooth transplantation. Nothing excites me as much as learning about innovations, especially everything related to digital dentistry. I look forward to contributing to research in any way I can in the future, as I see that as an integral aspect of our profession. For the past three years in the USA, I have been a Red Cross volunteer helping people with medical emergencies. I have also had the honor to serve as a Red Cross Blood Donor Ambassador, greeting blood donors, registering them, and explaining the guidelines, clarifying doubts, monitoring vitals, and answering any questions they might have. The great need for access to dental care in my country of origin was one of the principal reasons I decided to become a dentist in India. It troubles me to see dental care neglected and decay allowed to continue unabated, especially in children, missing the chance to correct problems early on before they become challenging. In India, on every 4th Sunday of the month, I would conduct a free dental education and consultation program and often performed procedures at no charge. I hope to continue this in the future here in America. I am troubled by many people in my community without insurance or funds to pay for dental expenses, and my heart goes out to them, especially the children. I feel needed, called, and ready to serve. Thank you for considering my application to your IDP. Indian International Dentist Advanced Standing #indian #internationaldentist #personalstatement #writing #editing #service #samples

  • Periodontology Residency VA Medical Center Applicant from Belarus

I could not be more passionate and excited about being selected for a residency position in Periodontology. It would be a special honor for me to be chosen to serve at the VA XXXX Medical Center as I am most attracted to the state-of-the-art treatment provided, the high volume of patients, and the broad range of procedures routinely performed at VA New Jersey. A particular highlight of my professional life was completing an externship at Philadelphia VA Medical Center while a dental student at the University of XXXX. I appreciate how busy it was there, and I received so much knowledge and vastly improved my surgical skills throughout those several weeks. I was proud of delivering the best care to veterans who served their country for many years. I was most favorably impressed with the excellent care provided to veterans and the top-notch resources available. VA XXXX Medical Center is one of the leading institutes in the country, offering research excellence across various fields. I find state-of-the-art research and technology fascinating, especially in Perio. I keenly look forward to a whole immersion experience in period disease and treatment. I see Drs. XXXX, XXXX, and XXXX are among the leading experts worldwide. I was especially impressed by Dr. XXXX’s work on periodontal disease features for smokers and people with Diabetes Mellitus. I am experienced in performing student research from my days in dental school in Belarus, where I researched the epidemiology of caries and gum disease. I am especially looking forward to the collaboration between prosthodontics and periodontics specialty residents, an exceptional multidisciplinary strength of the program. The coexistence of a resident training program in prosthodontics affords another opportunity for interdisciplinary learning. I most enjoyed this type of multidisciplinary interaction during my externship. Prosthodontics and Perio, especially implant dentistry, stand at the center of my professional world. As a member of the student surgical society in dental school in Belarus, I attended numerous international scientific conferences and seminars. I did a lot of research, for example, concerning the prevalence of gum recession in young populations and connections between risk factors and gum recession (smoking, inflammation, malocclusion, etc.). For example, I researched and spent many hours assisting with general surgeries and OMFS. I have fixed broken extremities and jaws, removed tumors, helped to restore missing face structures, and helped my patients successfully rehabilitate after car accidents. Making flaps, suturing, and using surgical handpieces makes me happy; I always get excited to see these procedures on my daily schedule. . I moved to the USA in 2010, first becoming a dental assistant and later working as a sleep technician. I learned much about sleep medicine and obstructive sleep apnea, which is helpful in everyday dental practice. I was accepted to the Dental School of the University of XXXX in 2015, graduated in 2017 with Honors in Radiology, and received the HANAU Prosthodontic Award. At XXXX Dental, I focused on Perio, research, and treatment as much as possible. And I enjoyed the great diversity found at Penn. Most of my CE credits are in Periodontology and Implantology: implant placement, crestal sinus lifting, soft tissues management, and working in the aesthetic zone; I also developed a more sophisticated understanding of troubleshooting. I enjoy Periodontology because it requires deep knowledge of science, biology, and surgical technics. Novel approaches to understanding tissue growth, healing, and regeneration. I hope to learn more about the body's immune response and the use of growth factors to develop bones and gums as necessary to achieve the ideal conditions for implant placement and Physiotherapy techniques to improve the microcirculation of periodontal tissues providing anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. I would be thrilled to have an opportunity to do research in these areas. I also see myself teaching at some point in my career, sharing Perio with new generations of dentists. Perio education in Belarus is vastly inferior to how it is practiced in the USA. I have longstanding dreams, therefore, of organizing international Perio courses and conferences in Belarus. Thank you for considering my application. Periodontology Residency VA Medical Center #periodontology #periodontics #VA #personalstatement #service #editing #writing #help

  • Disadvantaged Status Essay Divorce Father with Cancer

I ask for consideration for disadvantaged status as a student in dental school for two interrelated reasons that were determinative of my status growing up. Primarily, my parents had a toxic relationship ending in a violent divorce that made my life most difficult for my entire childhood and adolescence and part of my young adulthood. My father, always with good intentions, did try to do what he could to help me along in the world, but he was struck by cancer a few years ago, and it almost took his life. I had pondered how unfortunate it was that a life-threatening disease would strike my father when I needed him most. His cancer rendered him more of a burden than a support system. In 2013, we lost the home that we dearly loved as a result of the divorce and the mounting medical bills; our lives turned upside down; this made my pursuit of education difficult since the stress of just living took such a heavy toll, especially after I became a part-time caregiver for my father as he was weakened by cancer, both of our emotional states aggravated by intense worry over financial issues. After graduating from high school in Tijuana, Mexico, at 18, I would spend the next decade or so commuting several times a week across the international border to advance my education by studying in San Diego. After losing our home in Tijuana, I started living primarily in my car at school, showering at the gym, and spending most of my time at the library. I slept poorly in the car and constantly feared being discovered or harassed. This experience did help me learn the importance of not prioritizing material things and appreciating the essentials of daily life, focusing on good health, and assisting others to be healthy instead of being overly concerned with material items. Driving back and forth across the border to go home to Mexico and back to school was a disadvantage that I overcame with great struggle. The financial and emotional difficulties I have survived have made me more robust, and I have learned to work hard and have faith in myself. Most importantly, I have learned the critical importance of what is often life-saving medical care and the singular importance of oral health care. My dad was diagnosed with advanced cancer and multiple myeloma, and he needed much help because he started to lose his strength as his bones broke apart. I stepped back into his life for extended periods, mostly to take him to treatments at the hospital. The high demand for cancer treatments and our lack of financial resources made it difficult for me to secure adequate treatment for my father, which had a chance of success, especially given that I am the only member of my family fluent in English. Seeing him in these circumstances was tough, and I couldn’t stop looking for opportunities to help him. After many attempts, I found good doctors willing to help us with the chemotherapy and transplant he needed. I will forever be grateful that we also found the financial support that made my father´s treatment possible. He is now in remission from cancer, and I am thankful I can see him and spend time with him. I am proud of my choices and pleased with how my challenging experiences have fortified me to give my all to a demanding career, Dentistry. For several months, when I was not studying and sleeping a few hours in my car, I tried to get a little cat nap at the hospital while my dad was resting. Despite it all, I kept my grades up because I knew my dreams depended on them. After a few months of living partially at home and in the hospital, my dad was discharged and continued to improve steadily. I am sure that my humble or disadvantaged background provides me with extraordinary compassion for those often Spanish-speaking people in our communities who are underserved in oral health care. I look forward to giving my best as a dentist. Disadvantaged Status Essay Divorce Father with Cancer #disadvantagedstatus #essay #writing #editing #examples #samples #dentalschool #help

  • MSC Craniofacial Science Public Oral Health Canada

After finishing dental school in India in 2016, I came to Canada to advance my professional education and horizons. I had been planning to do this throughout dental school since I admire the state-of-the-art way dentistry is practiced in Canada, particularly concerning issues in craniofacial development. I first completed a Certificate Course on Evidence-Informed Public Health (EIPH) in October 2016 through Canada´s National Collaborating Centre for Methods and Tools. Next, I earned my MA in Leadership in Healthcare at XXXX University in XXXX, BC., finishing with a GPA of 3.78 in August 2019. I hope to earn my MSc in Craniofacial Science at the University of XXXX. After completing the program, I hope to gain additional, invaluable clinical experience in Canada before returning with my expertise to India. I look forward to becoming a national leader in Craniofacial Science and Public Oral Health in my home country. My first choice for advanced training in Canada is the MSc Program in Dentistry at XXXX University. I seek a complete immersion in craniofacial development - building upon my advanced understanding of embryology. Throughout the last four years in Canada, my interest has also been increasing incrementally in Pediatric Dentistry. I also see your program as advancing my career interest in pediatric dentistry. I hope to learn many valuable things in this area concerning the treatment of children and adolescents. After earning the MSc Degree, I hope to gain further work experience here in Canada, practicing on the forefront of Dentistry, continuing to learn about and participating in the development of integrated approaches to healthcare, especially concerning Pediatric Dentistry. My goal is to take what I have learned in America back to India, laboring for the balance of my career to help enhance oral health awareness amongst patients in India, especially young ones, incorporating as much preventive oral health care as possible. While a graduate student in my MA in Leadership in Healthcare Program at XXXX, I started working as a chairside dental assistant at XXXX Dental, providing me with much-needed exposure to how Dentistry is practiced in Canada. Working with patients of all age groups and various cultures was initially challenging. Still, I successfully adjusted to this vast diversity within the first couple of months, as I made rapid progress in handling patients. I see my celebration of diversity as one of my principal strengths. In addition to English and Hindi, I am fully fluent in two broadly spoken languages in India, Marathi, and Gujarati. This will serve me further in my career when I hope to pay increasing attention to India´s underserved, primarily rural areas, many of whom speak these languages. I also have advanced computer skills and extensive experience collaborating with PubMed/Medline and CINAHL. Since March of 2018, I have served in my present position as a Chairside Assistant at XXXX Dental Clinic in Burnaby, BC. Previously, I worked as a receptionist at XXXX Dentistry, also in XXXX, BC (Oct 2017 - Feb 2018). For the first half of 2017, I assisted a Dental Surgeon at XXXX Dental Clinic; for much of 2016, I shadowed at XXXX Pediatric Dental Clinic. I also completed my Internship at the XXXX Research Institute of Dental Sciences, in India, following my completion of dental school at the exact location, Aug 2015 - Sep 2016. I consider myself fortunate enough to get a chance to conduct awareness campaigns for Smile Train. Lessons from my childhood come flooding back in empathy, selfless humanity, and the sense of calling to health care. By age 8, I was convinced that my uncles, a neonatologist, and a pediatrician, were about as close as one could get to being superheroes. I worshipped them and felt most privileged whenever I was in their company, which was frequent throughout my formative years. My uncle, the pediatrician, was particularly influential in my development, given that during my summer breaks, I spent much of my time at his clinic, shadowing him and helping with what I could, going through many of his books, looking at all the pictures, and connecting them with the words. Thus, I felt called to pediatrics from an early age. Biology was my favorite field in high school, and this interest soon became focused on the oral cavity and the temporomandibular joint. Excelling in dental school, I spent five years studying most branches of dentistry. I was at my absolute best in the Pediatric lab. Another highlight was my internship's class presentation on cleft lip and palate. I was one of the very few students to serve as a teaching assistant or take additional classes in embryology and developmental discrepancies - supervised by the Department of Pediatric Dentistry faculty. I have long been deeply troubled by India's lack of oral health awareness. I hope to make my most exemplary contribution to my field by helping raise this awareness, especially regarding preventive care, dental hygiene, and diet. I hope to make my most exemplary contribution to my area by helping to raise this awareness, especially regarding preventive care, dental hygiene, and diet. My desire to contribute to long-term sustainable improvements in oral health awareness in India was the central driving force behind my earning the MA in Leadership in Healthcare. This dovetails nicely with the place in my heart for children and young people. Nothing gets me excited more than understanding them and engaging with them and their parents to safeguard their oral health from early on. Thank you for considering my application. • International Dentist OMFS Orthognathic Surgery

A woman from Saudi Arabia who could not be more devoted to her profession, Dentistry, I hope to distinguish myself in the future in the area of OMFS in particular, as I am convinced that it is in this area where I have my greatest passion, capacity, and the potential to make my most entire contribution to society. First, however, to prepare me for giving my all to OMFS, I hope to be accepted to and complete an Advanced Standing Program for International Dentists in the USA, where dentistry is the most advanced. After earning my doctorate in America, I look forward to putting this innovative foundation in dentistry to beneficial use at the service of advanced training in OMFS. I finished my six years of dental school in Riyadh in 2014 and completed a one-year internship. By early 2015, I lived in New York, giving my all to the English language 24/7 to successfully advance my career in dentistry in the USA, where it is practiced on the forefront. Being accepted to a doctoral program for international dentists has been my central and foremost goal for years. 2017-2018 were two of the best years of my life at XXXX University, immersed in Oral Surgery, my first love. My two years of advanced oral surgery training and practice at XXU have enabled and inspired me to hit the ground running in your DDS/DMD Program and distinguish myself as a highly devoted and hard-working dentist. This year, 2019, I have continued to study with ongoing education, which I treat as a priority only to my patients and other professional responsibilities. I renewed my Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Course certification, building upon earlier Advanced Trauma Life Support training. In addition to volunteering my time at Al-Habib Hospital, I also participate in helping with a variety of dental screenings that occur once a year. I chose my friends carefully in high school and cultivated my friendship with Seba for a particular purpose of crucial importance to my life course and direction. Intelligent, pleasant, and ambitious, the first thing that one noticed about her was her extended lower jaw, which made it difficult for her to eat and talk, let alone smile. However, my uncle, a rheumatism consultant, much to my delight, explained to me that her condition was treatable due to advances in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. From that moment forward, my professional horizon has come to focus with increasing clarity and specificity on my goals in OMFS. I find myself drawn like a moth to a flame to the radical, tangible, and sustainable improvements that dentistry, in general, and OMFS, in particular, can make to the lives of someone like my friend XXXX, who, after extensive treatment, had her problem entirely corrected. Knowing that I want very much to go on to specialize in OMFS after earning my doctoral degree in the USA, I have felt fully inspired to focus a great deal of effort on improving my abilities as an oral surgeon. After earning my doctoral degree in Dentistry by completing an Advanced Standing Program and completing a multi-year residency in OMFS, I hope to complete a fellowship in Orthognathic Surgery. In this way, I will have the ultimate preparation for extensive research in my field, becoming a leader in both OMFS and Orthognathic Surgery, especially in Saudi Arabia, where there are only a handful of well-trained specialists with advanced certificates from the West in these areas, so critical to the advancement of our field. After completing my training over several years, I hope to return to Saudi Arabia to build up and enhance our capabilities in every aspect of OMFS in the KSA. I want to leave my professional mark on this field by teaching the innovative ideas of the day and helping dental professionals in Saudi Arabia stay abreast of advancements in OMFS. I look forward to returning to the KSA as a highly skilled researcher and clinician, passionate about education and eager to share what I have learned with several new generations of dentists. I look forward to continuing to cultivate my leadership abilities as a student in your program whenever the opportunity arises. The first member of my family to become a dentist, I have long been focused on my professional passion, and I keep my goal of becoming a top-notch professional in OMFS. Eager to sacrifice salary, family, and home to invest in my future in Dentistry, I am ready for the rigors of your program to which I will devote myself 24/7. Completing your DDS/DMD program is my gateway to the world of advanced OMFS, the universe where I hope to immerse myself for the balance of my professional life. Thank you for considering me for a position in your distinguished DDS/DMD program. • Dental School Personal Statement Spanish Speaker, Flying Samaritans

I have always been intrigued by the scientific workings of the natural world. A biology major at SDSU, I spent almost two years helping to investigate the muscle function of flies, extensively cataloging physical characteristics—bristles, curly wings, eye shape—looking for mutations that would point us to the “flight gene.” The effects only last a few minutes when a fly is put under CO2, and I loved working under time pressure with great precision and efficiency. Nevertheless, gearing up for dental school and a lengthy career helping people every day, the biology lab did not do much to satisfy my desire for contact with people. “Why don’t you join the Flying Samaritans? You’d love it, and we need interpreters in our Tijuana clinic.” I looked incredulously at my friend, Mary. Hadn’t I just told her how busy I was with research and getting ready to graduate? But Mary persisted. A month later, translating for families in the busy clinic across the border in Mexico, I realized my friend was right. I discovered that dentistry combines my passion for scientific advancement with my love for hands-on work and my most keen desire to witness the improvement that I labor to make in the lives of others because of direct relationships. Volunteering in Tijuana gave me a glimpse of the sheer joy, day after day, which awaits me with a career in Dentistry. Translating for Dr. Silva, I had the enormous privilege of explaining procedures, reassuring nervous families, and providing general dental education. One 10-year-old boy with two broken molars told me about a horrific prior dental experience. Reassuring him, I felt grateful for my Spanish in his language, convincing him that he had nothing to fear with us. It was not until the Flying Samaritans that I fully appreciated the great need for dentists like me who speak Spanish and English as native languages, especially anywhere near the US southern border, where my opportunities for contributing to the oral health needs of the underserved abound. After college, I began interpreting at UCSD’s student-run dental clinic. That was how I met Andrea, a senior living on a fixed income. Her teeth were beyond repair without the means to afford dental care. After three weeks of waiting and adjustments, she was overwhelmed with gratitude and hugs for each of us at her final denture fitting. Even after she left, she returned to say thank you. Catching a glimpse of herself in a mirror, she burst into laughter, explaining that she had been so excited that her hands shook uncontrollably when she applied her lipstick. We laughed as I pointed out that even zig-zagging red lipstick couldn’t detract from her beautiful smile. There is an inexplicable feeling of fulfillment in seeing patients’ happiness after healing/restorative dental work. The needs are especially urgent in underserved communities for whom Spanish is increasingly the first and often only language the patient speaks. As a volunteer assistant in a low-cost emergency clinic, I help those afraid or unable to see a dentist find relief from their pain. I have been particularly inspired by the work of Dr. XXXX, a Spanish-English bilingual dentist whose empathetic care reaches across cultures. Splitting her time between the free clinics, her office, and international relief work, her impact stretches across the globe, and she brings what she learns to inspire many pre-dental students. For my part, backpacking across Indonesia, Thailand, and Singapore, I came to appreciate and think critically about my Mexican origins, every dish, drink, and dessert—the toll on my enamel erosion, etc. Another highlight was the Thousand Smiles Project, helping with activities for oral hygiene education. I look forward to decades to come searching for creative ways to connect dentistry and preventive care while also learning about cultures and traditions. Working alongside dentists in underserved communities ignited and confirmed my interest in dentistry. There is no better feeling than relieving a patient's pain and witnessing their joyful smile. I look forward to changing lives and improving the future by giving my all locally and globally. Concerning programs oriented towards those of the underserved who speak primarily Spanish, I look forward to assuming positions of increasing responsibility to maximize my contribution. • Covid 19 Impact Essay Supplemental Material

COVID-19 broadly impacted the world in 2020. If you want, you can use this space to describe how COVID-19 has impacted your preparation for the application to dental school to this point. My preparation for applying to dental school was adversely affected by COVID-19, especially because my sister became infected. I live with my mother and sister in Tijuana, Mexico. She has long labored against mental health challenges, and the tension and stress of this horrible year, coupled with the fact that she was infected, took a significant toll on her mental health. This past July 2020, she attempted suicide. It was nerve-wracking for me to take her to the nearest hospital in Tijuana, where most hospitals were already at maximum capacity with COVID-19-infected patients. My mother and I forced my sister´s door to find her unconscious, with her head, hands, and feet swollen because she had taken thirty pills from her psychiatrist’s prescription. Desperately we called the ambulance, but they never arrived. The neighbors, my mom, and I took her to the hospital, where thankfully, she could get her stomach cleansed before it was too late. The doctor told us that her airways could have collapsed if we had waited a little longer. Since this incident, her life has become calmer and more stable, and I am most thankful. This event has strengthened my patience and empathy, and I have become exceptionally patient and caring concerning those who suffer from mental health challenges. Being there for my sister has helped empower her to reach out for help instead of locking herself in and venting her frustrations. I have learned a lot about mental health from my sister´s ordeal. It makes me a better human being and will also make me a better dentist: patient, empathetic, and understanding. • Residency in General Dentistry Associate Dentist in London

Dentistry is, for me, a gratifying profession. I am anxious to arrive at the clinic each day and find it hard to leave when it comes time. I love the engagement, service, and ability to contribute to many lives. I get an enormous sense of satisfaction knowing that I make essential contributions to the oral health of my community. I could not be more dedicated to lifelong education in dentistry. Completing dental school at Poznan University in Poland in 2013 was only the beginning. Most of my internships and clinical experiences have been in London, so I am accustomed to practicing as an Associate Dentist on the forefront in two different dental practices, one in the Southeast and the other in the Northwest of London - providing NHS as well as private dental services. With sufficient experience, this is the optimal time to complete a residency program in General Dentistry. Since finishing dental school in Poland, I have been taking CPD classes and volunteering as much of my time as my circumstances allow, cultivating a special place in my heart for the underserved, who I hope to engage with increasingly as my career progresses. I also hope to be selected for your distinguished AEGD residency program at XXXX Medical Center to fully maximize my career potential as a general dentist, attending to patients with complex and routine oral and dental issues. I regularly volunteer at charitable dental clinics in Delhi, India, my country of origin, providing dental care to the underprivileged. My goal in these clinics is always the same, to get better and better at what I do, and the experience has enabled me to become highly efficient at the same time while always remaining compassionate. I also try to add something new to my clinical skill set regularly. Most patients I have treated in London came to me through the NHS. Thus, I had the privilege of treating an enormous diversity of people, primarily for routine dental treatment: the elderly, children, and people from all economic backgrounds, including individuals from communities of scarce resources that rarely have, if ever, seen a dentist. I thrive connecting with people of all ages and linguistic and ethnic backgrounds, refining my communication and interpersonal skills by caring for patients from diverse experiences. At this point in my dentistry career, I realize that I still have much more to learn, especially if I am to make my maximum contribution to the field. I am determined to deliver in General Dentistry. I hope to be selected for the AEGD Program at XXXX as a dentist ready to hit the ground running in your program and distinguish myself as a talented practitioner already skilled in many if not most dental procedures. I seek to acquire and master advanced multidisciplinary techniques and the management of complex cases. I am particularly favorably impressed with the rigorous curriculum at XXXX and the accomplishments of your most distinguished and erudite faculty, who have created a demanding yet nurturing learning environment. As a practicing dentist with strong interpersonal communication skills, I seek a well-rounded and unparalleled advanced education in general dentistry like the one provided by your program. • International Dentist Program IDP Myanmar

It is unusual in my country, Myanmar, formally known as Burma, to go to the dentist for checkups or preventive care. With very few exceptions, people only see a dentist when they have discomfort or a cosmetic issue. I was a rare exception since my parents regularly took me to the dentist. The most vibrant part of my memory is the toys I received in exchange for behaving well at the dentist. I look back on these early experiences as formative since I became a dentist. I often enjoy those early memories of my introduction to my field. My long-term objective is to complete an advanced standing doctoral program for international dentists in the USA and advance professionally through specialized advanced training as an orthodontist. Eventually, I hope to open my dental clinic specializing in orthodontic treatment and, at the same time, do what I can to advance the cause of dentistry back in Myanmar. A dentist needs to be more than an expert in treating oral disease; compassion, understanding, and an open mind are also required. On my first day of dental school, the dean directed his welcome speech to the new students and emphasized the importance of treating patients holistically, which forms a central and integral part of my professional ethic as an oral health professional. I enjoy very much not only the technical, hands-on aspects of dentistry but also the patients' experience. Since I wanted to obtain as much experience as possible in my fourth year in dental school, I was given the additional privilege of assisting at the dental clinic of the retired dean of our department. I admired how he and his associates treated the patients with great empathy, providing them with excellent care for which they were grateful. Following my graduation in 2011, I worked at three private clinics (Capital Dental Clinic, Milkyway Dental Clinic, and Top One Dental Clinic) as a part-time general dentist. I also volunteered to serve extra hours at community clinics (Pearl Monastery) and assist non-government organizations (Myanmar Dental Association, National Health Network). I provided atraumatic restorations (ART) and simple and surgical extractions. I also performed minor surgery such as removing mucocele and apicoectomies, root canal therapy, removable and fixed prostheses, removable and fixed orthodontic appliances, temporary dressings, composites, and amalgam restorations. While doing general dental practice in private clinics and participating in community oral health events, I developed an increasing passion for learning sophisticated techniques and helping with advanced treatments, general dental practice in private clinics, and participating in community oral health events, After graduation, I pursued a post-graduate dental diploma to enhance my skills further (2012- 2013). Unfortunately, Dentistry in Myanmar, especially dental education, is not as advanced as in the West or some other neighboring countries. Therefore, I tried to look for opportunities to study in developed countries. A chance came in 2015 to participate in the International Summer Program at Tokyo Medical and Dental University in Japan. I was selected for a poster presentation about the consequences of endodontically treated teeth. In 2016, another excellent opportunity came when I was offered a professional position in the Federated States of Micronesia and a full scholarship to study for a Ph.D. Program in the Endodontic Department at Tokyo Medical and Dental University. I decided to go to Micronesia – a US territory - since studying dentistry in the United States was my goal. In Micronesia, I treated patients for extractions, fillings, gold crown prostheses, removable dental prostheses, and minor surgery such as immediate reduction and intermaxillary fixation for mandibular fracture and surgical removal of impacted teeth, enucleation, operculectomy, apicoectomy, gingivoplasty, and gingivectomy. Moreover, I trained staff on taking X-rays and participated in the school dental care program. While working at the Pohnpei State Hospital in Micronesia, I had an opportunity to learn from a dentist colleague from the USA, who was in the Canvasback missions and making a critically crucial difference in the patients' lives. I learned from him about Pohnpei Snap bridges, which fabricated resin-fixed bridges for replacing decayed teeth, which were much more cost-effective and time-efficient than traditional porcelain bridges. I sat for and passed the National Board Exams in 2018 and 2019, clearing both parts on the first attempt. My professional dream is to provide excellent dental services and enhanced patient oral health care that significantly contributes to changing patients' lives in sustainable ways for the long term. I am determined to work diligently to fulfill my dreams. Continuing my academic journey as a student in your Advanced Education Program for International Dentists would be a special honor. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you. International Dentist Program IDP #myanmar #international #dentist #personalstatement #samples #editing #service
