  • Residency Periodontics Personal Statement Editing

A very hard-working Saudi Arabian dentist, I have learned to balance my full-time devotion to dentistry with my family artfully. I am a young woman whose first professional love is Periodontology. This has empowered me to become an expert in time management and multitasking; my fullest professional aspiration is to teach in this area and practice at some point in my career. Thus, I hope to receive some of the finest training in the world in Periodontology due to being accepted to and completing a Residency Program. I have always believed that a beautiful smile makes a person more attractive and confident, making an optimal first impression. Before beginning dental school, I was passionate about beauty and improving people’s lives in sustainable ways. For me, Dentistry fulfills both of those drives. I finished dental school in Saudi Arabia two years ago and was most proud to rank 8th in my class. Since beginning dental school, I have focused on Periodontology as the area where I hope to pursue advanced training. Particularly after my first two years of dental school, I learned enough about various areas of specialization in dentistry to feel fully confident that Periodontology was the correct choice for me. By my fifth year, I was treating patients under the supervision of a resident dentist with advanced training in Periodontology. I began to better understand our field's theoretical and clinical aspects, attended more surgeries, and watched videos online. I came to appreciate the equal importance of periodontium and dentation. In my internship, I focused on Implantology, which I could not do in dental school, and I fell in love with all aspects of implants. My four months of rotations in various implant clinics in different hospitals were some of my best times, along with regular workshops on multiple aspects of implant techniques and resources.  By the end of this experience, I was convinced I wanted to give my professional life mostly to Implantology. I so loved being a student that I began to dream of teaching someday about this time in my career. On a few occasions, I went to schools to talk about my specialty and how much it could improve people's lives, providing instructions concerning dental care and avoiding dental problems. I have always been a person who loves to discover things and learn more, which has led me to participate in many research projects; for the last couple of years, most of my research efforts have been in Periodontics. I want to devote my life to helping patients have a higher quality of life due to their treatment. I also seek a lifetime of intense community engagement and support as an oral health professional. I keenly look forward to participating in public health campaigns and want to raise awareness about the importance of periodontics. I feel strongly that my six years of formal academic training in dentistry will enable me to hit the ground running in your program and excel. Thank you for considering my application. • Pediatric Endodontics Residency Personal Statement

The University of XXXX School of Dentistry is my first choice among residency programs in Endodontics because my particular interest is in Pediatric Endodontics. I appreciate how XXXX receives many pediatric patients compared to other Endodontic programs. Since I aspire to distinguish myself in research and practice, XXXX would be perfect. I appreciate the rotary system employed at XXXX and how it encourages independent thinking and learning. I first decided to seek advanced training in Endodontics when I served as an Associate Dentist in my native India, not long after finishing dental school in my country. At first, I was nervous, but with each new patient to which I administered an endodontic procedure, my confidence grew along with my growing passion for this area of dentistry. Soon, I fell in love with the challenge of looking for extra canals, negotiating through calcified ones, and completing challenging cases. One prominent reason why Endodontics has become the center of my world is that those who need an endodontics procedure often come to the clinic in excruciating pain. I find their gratitude to be the sweetest possible reward. Nothing excites me more or leaves me feeling more fulfilled than alleviating pain sustainably, freeing my patients from acute pain, and saving their teeth simultaneously. Eager to gain as much expertise in Endodontics as possible, I assisted a visiting endodontist in surgical and complicated non-surgical cases. Concurrently, I attended a six-month general practice residency program that gave me one-on-one training with the endodontic faculty to improve my skill further. I was able to perform 250+ RCTs, including primary teeth and retreatments. After four years of clinical practice in India, I moved to the United States. When I entered the Advanced Standing DDS program at XXXX University, it seemed that the more I learned about endodontics, the more there was to learn. I especially appreciate the support of my mentor Dr. XXXX, Chair of the Endodontics Department at XXXX. As a result of his leadership, I listened to diverse guest lectures by renowned endodontists. Under Dr. XXXX’s guidance, I was privileged to assist with a retreatment case. I also discovered exciting technological advantages, like microscopes, allowing me to perform endodontic treatments more perfectly.  Perfection seemed within my reach for the first time, and I gave it my all. Another highlight of my time at XXXX was performing patient case reviews under the guidance of Associate Professor of Endodontics Dr. XXXX. In addition to his lectures filled with pearls of wisdom gleaned from decades of practice, he also helped me develop in Endodontics by encouraging me to share my experiences as a dentist in India and showing me how to build on those experiences the most successfully. My in-depth exposure to Endodontics at XXXX reaffirmed my dedication to cultivating a lifetime specialization in this area. For the past two years since graduation, I have continued to learn from the pioneers as part of the online community in Endodontics, AAE, and Endolit, and I have been taking CE courses from the AAE Live Learning Center. as well as participating at the annual meetings of the AAE in 2017 & 2018. I am also enrolled in pre-specialty Endodontic training at the University of XXXX in preparation for beginning your program on the forefront between Pediatric Dentistry and Endodontics. Thank you for considering my application. Pediatric Endodontics Residency Personal Statement #pediatricendodontics #pediatricdentistry #dentalresidency #writingandediting #personalstatement

  • Pediatric Dentist Residency Public Health

Since I began dental school, I have intended to pursue Pediatric Dentistry, and this ambition was increasingly confirmed as my training and career progressed. I sought as much exposure to the specialty as possible, carefully observing the techniques and characteristics displayed by professionals in this area. I was hospitalized in my early teens for a significant period and witnessed the positive effects of caring, compassionate medical staff on seriously ill child patients.  Pediatric Dentistry calls for unique characteristics and elevated levels of specialist skill and knowledge: endless patience, profound empathy, a practiced ability to inspire trust and confidence, and, most importantly, a genuine and deep affection for children. I would not apply if I were not convinced that I possess these characteristics. I began working with children as a volunteer, helping to organize and manage Special Olympics events while still in high school. I have continued to work with children over the years, collaborating with various projects focusing on young people and oral health care. In my last year of Dental school, I applied for a Pediatric Dental Residency position to fulfill my dream immediately, working with the demographic that keeps me smiling. I was not selected. I did MATCH when I applied to AEGD residencies and was thrilled to be chosen for service in a Public Health Clinic, where I fell head over heels in love with Public Health Dentistry. This position gave me the invaluable opportunity to hone my skills and gain confidence in all aspects of Dentistry in preparation for outstanding excellence in Pediatrics. I am now firmly focused not just on children but also on children from families with scarce resources. The clinical experience of my AEGD Residency, complete with lectures and additional training courses, helped me become proficient in Endodontics, Periodontics, Pediatrics, Prosthodontics, practice management, and evidence-based dentistry. Even before entering dental school, I also had a long history of shadowing dentists and assisting them. Before dental school, my favorite experience was helping at the XXXX County Organization for Rural Needs (ACORN) in the Children’s Dental Clinic. It was a long drive, but I enjoyed both the anticipation while on my way and savoring the day's memory during my drive home. Nothing had yet brought me such joy as my interactions with these children, helping to calm them down and explaining the procedures. I have been involved in child-related volunteer activities since 2007. Since 2014, I have provided children with dental and oral health education, including pro-bono treatment for underserved children. I was raised to believe that charitable endeavor is an obligation rather than a choice. I could not be happier to help children who might otherwise have gone untreated or suffered from further delays in treatment. My focus on children has helped me better appreciate the critical importance of early education in adopting effective dental and oral hygiene regimes. I look forward to a lifetime of ‘spreading the word’ as widely and as early as possible to children and those who care for them. My AEGD training was undertaken under the mentorship of highly trained, caring, and skilled professionals and involved a full year serving in a clinic that attended to an ethnically diverse and underserved population. The program also involved research projects and emphasized making decisions based on thoroughly analyzing all available evidence. This experience allowed me to develop the advanced diagnostic and treatment-planning skills vital in dentistry, which I constantly seek to cultivate further. I look forward to having broad exposure to research due to a dynamic, state-of-the-art residency experience - part of your team in Pediatric Dentistry. Since 2012, I have worked as a Pediatric Dental Specialist alongside XXXX DDS, serving as her right hand and learning all I can from one of the finest Pediatric Dentists around. After five years at her side, I am well-versed in running a successful Pediatric Dentistry Clinic. In addition to my work alongside Dr. XXXX, while in Dental School, I met another pediatric dentist, Dr. XXXX, who allowed me to shadow and assist her for the past several years. From Dr. XXXX, I have gained a lot of exposure to various techniques for treating children, including sedation. One of my two public health rotations during Dental School also happened with a doctor who primarily sees children. Treating children, I always end the day with a smile. After completing your program and gaining additional experience on the forefront, I hope to open my clinic as a Pediatric Dentist and make a difference with every child I see. • Indian Orthodontist Residency Personal Statement Edit

I was always interested in science at school but had no career goal. This situation changed when, at sixteen, I underwent orthodontic treatment. The treatment results enhanced my self-esteem and gave me life-changing confidence. I decided to apply my love of science to dentistry. Now, I hope that my application to your residency program in Orthodontics will be looked upon with favor. I have a well-developed esthetic sense that makes dentistry an excellent career choice, combined with a love of science. I hope to become an orthodontist and teacher in my field. I am excited to be in a profession where advances in techniques, materials, and equipment are rapidly made. As my studies progressed, I realized that an excellent dentist did not merely alleviate pain and improve appearance, but enhanced general health, provided better dietary options, and improved communication ability. As a student in dental school, I founded a volunteer group called ‘Helping Hands.’ We worked in deprived rural areas and public schools, running health camps providing emergency and primary oral healthcare. We also provided basic education in oral and dental health. I started the group because, in the small town in India where I was raised, dental care was scarce, and most people suffered from poor dental health, not realizing its importance or simply being unable to afford treatment. Witnessing grimaces of pain turn into smiles of relief gave our team enormous satisfaction. After graduation, I worked as a general dentist for two years in my hometown. There is no dental insurance in India, so one additional skill I learned was to provide the best possible treatment within the financial limits of the patient. I was exposed to various patients and conditions and became a confident and effective practitioner. I was exceptionally able to soothe the child or nervous patient. I ensured that each patient was treated with profound respect. I also learned to remain calm under the pressure of providing emergency treatments, liaise with other dentists and specialists as appropriate, and manage my time effectively to benefit the practice and patients. The patient feedback and my interaction with them were always positive and satisfying, confirming that I had made the right choice of dentistry as a career. When I married, I left my practice and accompanied my husband to the US. I shadowed dentists, participated in dental conferences, and undertook dental-related volunteer activities to acquaint me with the local professional dental environment and keep abreast of current developments. I have been an active volunteer for three years with ‘More Smiles Wisconsin’ (MSW), a local non-profit organization whose mission is to provide access to quality dental care to the underserved. Assisting so many caring volunteer dentists has been inspirational. It has also been highly instructive to see many practitioners at work using advanced materials and technology unavailable in India and comparing their different techniques. I have had the opportunity to interact with volunteers and patients of many social and cultural backgrounds and have been personally enriched by it and have made many friends. I also initiated an Oral Health Education Committee at MSW to raise funds, provide dental awareness programs, conduct oral screenings at oral health education camps, and help the underserved source dental treatment. MSW was founded by two dentists who had one chair in a Salvation Army building and has developed into a significant charitable provider of therapy and education. I am full of admiration for its founders and workers. I was sometimes distressed to discover that patients could not attend work because of dental pain while being unable to afford it, a loss to patients, employers, and society. I have also been involved with patients needing major surgery, which had to be postponed indefinitely because of poor dental or oral health and the fear of infection. I became aware that less than 50% of people in the US have dental insurance, which clearly indicates the lack of awareness of the close relationship between oral/dental health and general health. Once qualified to practice here, my firm intends to continue volunteering as a dentist with MSW and help educate the population, especially financially challenged patients, concerning the importance of dental and oral health for their well-being. I also hope to provide subsidized treatments to needy patients in my practice and build a non-profit organization that enables me to specialize in helping the underserved. My central goals are to build on my training and experience to become an excellent dentist, provide quality care irrespective of socioeconomic status, spread awareness of the necessity to maintain good oral and dental health and continue advancing my specialization in orthodontics. Thank you for considering my application. Indian Orthodontist Residency Personal Statement Editing

  • CAAPID Personal Statement Service Orthodontics

I consider myself to be a competent professional. I am thrilled to be a member of a profession in which so many advances in techniques and materials are being achieved for the benefit of so many. I look forward to learning and applying the most advanced methods available. I understand that not every dentist who appreciates the value of orthodontics, my specialty of choice, is equipped to specialize. Those uncommon skills and characteristics are required, but I have the potential to become a first-class practitioner. I enjoy the treatment planning process and am meticulous in pre-treatment preparation; I readily cooperate with others to achieve a common goal, I consider myself to be an original and creative person with an appreciation of esthetics, and I believe that my empathy and patient-centered approach together with an ability to communicate well, will provide a firm basis to excel in the specialty. I am extremely interested in research and have been involved in as much research as possible during and since my internship. I have already contributed to one piece of published research, ‘Awareness and Acceptance of Dental Therapists Among Dentists: A Cross-sectional Study Among Dentists in XXXX.’ I am working on research on restorative dentistry, which is currently in the publication process and entitled: ‘Assessment of Adaptation of Two Types of Dental Adhesives and Composites Using Cross Polymerization Optical Coherence Tomography.’  The characteristics of an excellent orthodontist overlap with those of undertaking effective research. I am confident that I have the potential to conduct effective research and look forward to doing so. I know many more cultures are represented in the US than in Saudi Arabia. Consequently, cultural sensitivity and awareness are vital to US medical or dental professionals. I am widely traveled and enjoy being exposed to varied cultures, learning about their histories and traditions, and sharing knowledge of my heritage. I particularly enjoy trying the foods of diverse cultures.  I am a friendly, outgoing person with a well-developed sense of humor, and am fully fluent in English. I participated in many extra-curricular activities during my training, which provided helpful experience as an influential team member, enabling me to excel as part of a professional team. Unusually for a child, I was enthusiastic about visiting the dentist because mine was so kind, patient, and friendly. I wanted to emulate her early, so I decided to pursue dentistry. It is a decision I have never regretted; seeing grimaces of pain turn into smiles of relief and gratitude provides me with great satisfaction. I qualified in 2016 with a creditable GPA of 4.4/5, completed an internship program in Saudi Arabia in mid-2017, and have worked in general practice since then. This background has provided me with extensive exposure to general dentistry. I am now seeking to qualify to practice in the US and then pursue specialist studies in Orthodontics which have become a passion since seeing the dramatic and life-enhancing results that excellent specialists can provide. I aim to become a world-class specialist practicing, researching, and teaching in the specialty and providing widespread and effective dental and oral health preventative education in Saudi Arabia and beyond. One of my primary interests is providing preventative education in oral and dental health in Saudi Arabia. An increasing incidence of caries is a feature of Saudi dental health caused by the growing consumption of refined sugars, contributing significantly to obesity and diabetes. I want to be part of the solution to this problem. I see the key as being educated at the earliest possible ages, having close parental involvement, and regularly reinforcing that diet and dental health regimes can enhance general health. I have benefited from excellent training and facilities and have treated patients of all ages with various conditions. I sought as much exposure to esthetic dentistry during my undergraduate studies as possible. I assisted in many challenging cases involving esthetics and enhancement of function, which provided exceptional satisfaction. My passion for orthodontic work was indeed fired when assisting in treating a girl in her late teens who was extremely distressed because of the unsightly appearance of her anterior teeth and confided that she had little confidence and avoided social gatherings. Her appearance was dramatically improved when her treatment was complete, and her faith was restored. Shortly afterward, she became engaged, and I was privileged to be invited to her wedding. I assure the reader that I shall apply exceptional diligence and enthusiasm to the program to excel rather than merely succeed within it. Thank you for considering my application. A dentist from India, I have been making a new life for myself in America since 2013. Since March 2014, I have been working as a Registered Dental Assistant at XXXX, a clinic near where I live in Houston, Texas. I have fallen totally in love with the practice of dentistry in America. It brings me such joy that I am anxious to get to the clinic early each day to begin. I have learned a great deal about some of the most advanced procedures in our clinic that will help me to excel in your DDS Program and empower me towards a long career, giving my all to my patients and increasingly making my contribution to the underserved, first in the USA and later in my native India which is in such great need. My duties at XXXX include maintaining accurate and timely records of test results and applying standard quality control procedures to assure their accuracy, regulating sterilization and asepsis protocols, managing, and ordering materials, and keeping records for state inspection and various laboratory works. I enjoy operating, calibrating, and performing routine maintenance on specialized equipment. I maintain our supply inventory, organize files and records, and prepare solutions and stains for prescribed tests. I also greet patients, set up the operatory, take and develop radiographs, and assist the dentist with various treatments and procedures. In addition to my full-time position as a Dental Assistant, since May 2015, I have worked as a research technician at the XXXX Center for Biomaterials and Biomimetics, part of the UXX School of Dentistry complex. This has also enabled me to learn about important aspects of dentistry that will be useful in the long term, especially back in India, which confronts significant challenges in waste disposal. I am very much in love with America and considering joining the US Army as a practicing dentist after completing my DDS or DMD program for at least several years, allowing me to give something back to the newly adopted country that has taken me in. I also see this as excellent preparation for a lifetime of professional service to my community at the local level here in America. Serving in the military would allow me to care for the oral health needs of a critical sector of our population, those giving their lives for our country; I cannot think of anyone more deserving of dental care. In addition, the US Army is disproportionately ethnic-minority men and women, African American, Latino, Asian, African, etc. It would be a special privilege to gain additional experience with such a vast diversity of patients. Finally, dentistry in the US Army is very high-tech, using the latest equipment and procedures, helping me continue to advance and stay at the forefront of rapid developments in dentistry and broaden my professional horizons. My long-term plan is to practice as an academic dentist. This will allow me to advance my research skills and stay updated on the latest developments in Dentistry. I have always stepped forward to serve my community and took an active, if not leading, role in numerous dental camps while in dental school. Since I arrived in America, I have also worked extremely hard as a volunteer for several worthy causes related to oral health. I continue to strengthen my leadership and communication skills – ever more adept at fostering teamwork among my colleagues. My professional experience as a dental assistant and a research technician at the Biomaterials Laboratory has helped me fully acclimate to America; now, I am convinced that I am ready to hit the ground running in your DDS/DMD program. Regularly attending and participating in conferences and seminars in various dental areas, I have consistently labored to stay up to date with the latest dental research and technology developments. I have groomed and disciplined myself to be pragmatic and caring, making a conscious effort to constantly enhance my capacity for self-criticism and improvement with a firm determination to succeed in dentistry in the USA. I am especially interested in research on dental materials' optical properties. My other areas of unique engagement with literature are oral cancer and periodontitis. My volunteer work here in Houston also stands at the center of my world. In addition to serving as a Dental Assistant at events organized by the XXXX Medical Center, for the past 16 months, I have also been volunteering at the Cardiac Care Unit of a local medical center. I never miss an AIDS Walk, an Oral Cancer Awareness Walk, or fail to participate in a Give Kids a Smile event at the UXX School of Dentistry. • Personal Statement Residency Endodontics

Immediately after I qualified in 2014, I joined the army as a military dentist but was not aware, at that time, what a wise professional decision this was. I was given early responsibility for the dental health of a large population of patients, gaining comprehensive general dental experience over a brief period. The core military values aligned very closely with my own, emphasizing personal integrity and ethical behavior. The army has also provided me with excellent post-graduate specialist training, with a significant amount devoted to endodontics. I am now a Senior Captain Dental Officer and have been assigned as a Clinical Mentor to recent graduates from Dental School. I regard this appointment as a recognition of my professional ability, communication skills, and potential. I enjoy helping the junior Captains develop their knowledge and diagnostic and clinical skills. Because of a growing interest in endodontics and increasing experience and skills in this area of work, with the permission of the dental detachment commander, I began to manage an increased number of patients with endodontic lesions in the clinic, as there is no endodontic specialist within the CAF. I have witnessed many restorable teeth with endodontic lesions being extracted for implants and seen many of those implants fail and recognized the need for expert treatments which I now seek to become equipped to provide. I undertook only 6 RCTs during my undergraduate studies, which was the minimum to qualify, and then I had no particular interest in endodontics. However, as endodontic treatments became a significant feature of my military dental work, including over two hundred RCTs, I wanted to learn about endodontics, which often provides immediate and dramatic pain relief and the saving of teeth and so affords professional satisfaction. This interest crystallized into a decision to specialize in this area during a two-week course run by three impressive AEGDs. I learned much about the various aspects of endodontics, re-treatments, and surgery. I am drawn by the prospect of specializing in a field with frequent advances in techniques and materials. I hope to participate in those developments by assisting in research. I am particularly interested in regenerative endodontics and undertaking evidence-based treatments. I have no research experience and know that even an excellent practitioner is not necessarily a good researcher. However, I possess characteristics and potential that will enable me to assist in research projects. I have demonstrated an ability to think creatively and initially when forming treatment plans since my military training has emphasized a measured, disciplined, and carefully planned approach to my work (and indeed to my life generally). I possess determination and intellectual curiosity and am happy to work collaboratively to achieve common goals. My ultimate goals are to provide high-quality endodontic treatments working in an underserved community, preferably in a multi-disciplinary clinic handling particularly complex cases/endodontic failure. I would also donate my time and skills to those unable to pay to avoid extractions. Because I have been an influential teacher and have enjoyed this aspect of work, I would also seek to pass on my skills to other dentists and students. I know that providing medical services requires a high cultural awareness and sensitivity. I have studied, worked, and socialized with people of many cultural and social backgrounds, and enjoy learning about new cultures and sharing knowledge of my rich heritage. I seek to be a ‘well-rounded’ person and pursue several hobbies, including marathon running and playing guitar. The digital sensitivity I have acquired as a string musician assists my work. I represent my military unit in the United Way Fundraising charity, which seeks to help disadvantaged people within the local community. My parents have had financial struggles over the years, and I feel an affinity with those suffering similarly. Thus, I find my voluntary endeavors highly satisfying. My professional background and personal characteristics will enable me to add considerable value to the program and assure the reader that I shall apply myself with exceptional diligence and enthusiasm for my fellow students' benefit. I aim to excel rather than merely succeed. To summarize: I have acquired significant general and endodontics experience and training since graduation; I have achieved the status of mentor to other dentists in a short period, demonstrating the trust of my superiors in my professional ability and personality; and I have had the advantage of practical and expert post-graduate training provided by the CAF. However, my most important recommendation is a genuine passion for the specialty and my determination to become an acknowledged expert practitioner and teacher. Thank you for considering my application. Personal Statement Residency Endodontics #dentalresidency #statement #writingservice #endodontics #editing #master #military #korean

  • Sample Disadvantaged Student Status Essay Dental

The disadvantages I have faced with my family are primarily due to being Palestinian, a people expelled from their homeland by force, leading, for most, to great misery and suffering. I was born in Jordan to two parents who were both Palestinian refugees. Fortunately, we were able to immigrate to the US in 2000. Because it is our homeland, I feel deeply connected to Palestine, especially Jerusalem and Gaza. I still have family there and daydream every day of going to Palestine as a dentist and treating those with little-to-no access to dental care. My disadvantaged status is the driving force behind my dream of returning to Palestine as a missionary dentist. My father was born just one year before the creation of the state of Israel in 1948 and barely survived the ensuing Arab Israeli War of that year. His father, my grandfather, was a police officer who was killed by the Israeli occupying force when my dad was 11 years old. Thus, overnight, my father found himself the primary wage earner for the entire family at 11, helping to support his four younger siblings and his mother. When my father reached adulthood, he was finally forced to flee Palestine for Jordan and live as a refugee due to the Six-Day War in 1967.  My father wanted to become a doctor but could not afford medical school in Jordan, studying Economics in Lebanon. My family was extremely fortunate to immigrate to the USA in 2000.  My parents left everything they had built in Jordan to come to the United States – thinking about the future education of their five children. Nevertheless, living in the USA was a great struggle for us for many years for economic reasons. My father worked menial jobs at first and was then able to start up his gas station, which, however, failed - money was always tight. My father has been a great inspiration to me because he always struggled to provide us with economic stability and even earned his bachelor's degree in business administration at age 65. My siblings and I have also worked to support each other as a team and my mother. I sometimes reflect on the difficult times that I went through, and it drives me forward to persevere: the day I got my first job as a busboy and felt tempted to eat the food left on the plate by the customers, working at a go-cart track to scrape together the extra money that I needed for school supplies. What money I could pull in went to household bills and groceries. I remember seeing my classmates in the affluent school I attended, who had given so much to them, and I hoped my children would enjoy similar comforts one day. I hope and pray that through my hard work and dedication to my career, my children will not have to grow up as I did, constantly worrying about money and working when they should be studying or learning something of value. I have volunteered numerous hours to help with the MTI mobile dental clinics that serve the underprivileged communities in our area, IMPACT XXU. I have taught teens with special needs and engaged in these efforts to help the underserved prepare for a lifetime - because this provides me with the most incredible sense of satisfaction. I hope to someday go to Palestine as a missionary dentist for long periods, teaching dentistry and helping with sustainable efforts to achieve access to dental care for even the poorest of Palestinians, a mammoth task in such a broken and devastated land that is under a blockade and regularly bombed from the air every several years, making the rebuilding of the country most difficult. I am proud of who I am, as an individual, as a Palestinian-American, and most of all, as the dentist I hope to become. Being granted Disadvantaged Student Status for Dental School will enable me to complete the program and excel; at the same time, devote as much time as possible to helping the underserved and preparing for a lifetime of priority assistance to the underserved while still in dental school and beyond. Nothing will bring me as much satisfaction in the future as helping refugees who made their way to the USA as we did, especially those fleeing war zones in the Middle East with whom I share a first language, Arabic. • International Dentist Personal Statement Oncology

I understood the importance of a simple smile early in my life. My dental imperfections made me a very self-conscious and shy child growing up. Crowded teeth and a love for chocolates made me an early visitor to the dentist. I vividly remember Dr. XXXX, who knew how to handle a scared and shy child like me. An Orthodontist by specialization, he made the procedure so painless and fun that I looked forward to attending his clinic every time. This transformation boosted my confidence, and I felt like a different person with a new, much more favorable appearance. This experience left such a positive imprint on me that dentists became my heroes, and I have seen dentistry as an especially glorious calling ever since. Over time, what was initially a childhood fantasy turned into my reality. Before choosing a career, I volunteered at Dr. XXXX’s clinic to further explore the field after high school. ”Philosophy begins in wonder,” said Plato, and so did my romance with Dentistry. This past year, I have been making a new home with my husband in Chicago and giving my all to learn everything I can about dentistry in the USA. I am an Indian Dentist who is incredibly determined to succeed. India has some of the highest oral cancer rates globally, so I have been heavily engaged for many years now in this struggle. This also helps explain why I married the man that I did, a medical doctor and an oncologist. We spent a lot of time discussing cancer; for us, the struggle against cancer is very romantic- standing at the center of our world. The most significant contribution I can imagine making would be to give my professional life to the study and advancement of dental oncology. Of course, the logical next step is to earn the DDS or DMD degree to have the cutting professional knowledge and education I need to excel. After completing dental school, I hope to pursue a fellowship in Dental Oncology. My extremely high motivation to pursue this area of dentistry was enhanced further by helping my uncle deal with and survive oral cancer – nothing has ever brought me such profound joy as this personal experience in dentistry. I have also volunteered with cancer patients at the AIMS cancer center in India. I am very well-read in radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and surgery for head and neck cancer. Throughout my practice, I have had the privilege of working with underserved populations and have gradually come to understand the complexity of their challenges: an abysmal lack of awareness of the importance of dental hygiene and oral hygiene health care. I am passionate about teaching and research, and I look forward to someday serving in an academic institution where I can balance clinical, education, and research responsibilities. Little is known about the field of Dental Oncology in India. Thus, I aim to organize workshops for dentists in India concerning how to care for these patients. I stay in touch and am involved with the cancer center where I volunteered in India. I look forward at some point to helping establish a specialized dental unit there for underserved populations, especially those hard-hit by oral cancer. I am a competitive applicant for your program because I am an experienced and hard-working dentist with five years of experience in India before coming to America. I feel confident and prepared for the rigors and commitment to succeed in a world-class dental program. Thank you for considering my application. • Pre-Dental Post-Bac Program Personal Statement Help

Now a US citizen, I grew up mostly in our native Yemen. My dentist uncle took me under his wing as a child and taught me the satisfaction gained from service to the weakest among us, especially those suffering from unbearable pain. I come from the poorest country in the Middle East, with the least public health capacity in oral health. Nevertheless, my uncle found the time to treat refugees from Somalia and his regular patients. He is my hero; my honor is built upon my dream of following him in the United States. Dentistry appeals to me because of its breadth: involving aesthetics, pain relief, corrective surgery, and oral and dental disease prevention. I am aware that the aging of the population will have a direct effect on dentistry. I come from a culture where the aged are treated with profound respect. I look forward to working with the elderly, especially those in difficult financial circumstances and underserved communities. I intend to work in an underserved community and do all I can to educate its members on the importance of oral hygiene routines. In High School, I joined programs to prepare me for a career in healthcare provision. The plan included shadowing various health professionals in a hospital and confirming my desire to become a dentist.  I have volunteered in dentists’ offices, observing a wide variety of procedures, understanding the roles of their staff members, and providing general assistance. These experiences have provided me with an excellent basic understanding of dental techniques, the operation of a dentist’s office, and the dental health environment in the US.  I have also undertaken much informal reading about dentistry. I am excited at the rapid and continuing developments in techniques and materials and am keen to assist in the research bringing about these continuing advances. I know many people are reluctant to find themselves in the dentist’s chair out of apprehension and fear of pain. Interpersonal skills and the ability to inspire confidence in patients and empathize with them are as necessary as technical knowledge and skills. I have the natural characteristics to enable me to do so successfully. I have happily studied, worked, and socialized with people of many cultural and social backgrounds. I currently work as a retail manager to support my family during my studies. I was rapidly promoted to this position because my employers recognized various skills and characteristics that I believe are directly applicable to a career in dentistry.  I lead, supervise, motivate, direct, plan, and budget while, most importantly, providing excellent customer service. I know that there will be many well-qualified applicants for the program. However, I consider myself to be an excellent candidate. I have a passionate desire to become a skilled, knowledgeable, and caring dentist, and I have the potential to do so. Thank you for considering my application to your distinguished Pre-Dental, Post-Bac Program. I was determined to make a difference rather than merely make a living. In dentistry, I have found an excellent way of fulfilling that ambition. My practical training in India was undertaken in rural villages, prisons, and other institutions. I found great satisfaction in turning grimaces of pain into smiles of relief and gratitude. I am also extremely excited to be part of a profession in which techniques and materials are advancing so rapidly for the benefit of patients. I have never regretted my decision to enter dentistry and now seek the skills and knowledge to enable me to practice here in the USA. I graduated, in 2010, from the prestigious Oxford Dental College, Bangalore, India, which has first-class facilities and provides excellent, comprehensive dental training. It has been awarded the highest possible government accreditation for dental training, and entry is highly competitive. Our training included treating rurally based patients at ‘Dental Camps’ from mobile dental clinics. I was exposed to an extensive range of dental conditions during my training, treating patients of all ages and imparting dental and oral hygiene education. This exposure has taught me the importance of applying great care in diagnosing and acquiring and developing this skill to the highest possible degree. The mobile clinic method of reaching patients who would otherwise have gone untreated appeals, and I look forward to additional service in this area. After graduation, I worked as a dentist in two clinics in India for two years. During this time, I extended my experience by undertaking procedures like root canal treatments, crown preparation; composite and amalgam restoration; complete and removable prosthesis preparation, and treatment planning. I also gained experience in clinic fiscal management and overseeing laboratory work. Since coming to the U.S. in 2012, I have qualified and worked as a Dental Assistant. This has provided me with an understanding of the U.S. dental ‘environment’ and allowed me to observe the techniques used by excellent and dedicated dentists. This has also provided me with insight concerning the perspective of the dental assistant and the importance of their role. I have worked as a Dental Assistant for a dentist who uses a mobile clinic to treat the residents of nursing homes in Texas and has thoroughly enjoyed this experience. Taking the clinic to the patient seems to be an excellent way of providing treatment to underserved rural communities, and it is my intention, once qualified to work in the U.S., to operate such a clinic here. I also hope to be able to assist Indian dentists in setting up mobile clinics for rural and isolated communities back home. I intend to spend some time each year providing free work in India throughout my career. I have also been able to ‘shadow’ an expert dentist in the U.S. who has generously given considerable time to my extended informal training in the U.S. I have also attended dental conferences and extensive reading of professional journals to keep abreast of current developments in such a fast-changing professional environment. Before coming to this country, my impression was that the kind of problems I had seen in India would have been rare. I was surprised to discover that neglect of dental health and consequent issues are widespread. I would be interested in assisting in research to identify the most effective ways of educating people in adopting and maintaining a good hygiene regime. I have become aware of cultural differences in attitudes and that immigrant populations here tend to have the same attitude toward dental health as prevailing in their countries of origin. So perhaps the ‘targeting’ of educational resources to populations with the most pronounced problems may be worth considering. I know that technical competence alone is insufficient; it is vital to possess the characteristics that create confidence and trust in patients, especially when complex treatments are necessary. I have happily interacted professionally and socially with people of many ethnic and social backgrounds. I enjoy sharing knowledge of my own culture and learning about others. I get on quickly with colleagues and patients. I am fluent in English, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada and have limited fluency in Telugu and Tamil. I took an active role in extra-curricular activities at Dental School, was elected Secretary of the Sports Society, and held various other offices related to culture and sport. My excellent training, considerable experience, naturally outgoing and empathetic personality, and genuine passion for dentistry will enable me to contribute to the program and become a highly effective and expert professional. The day I found the most incredible clarity about who I am and what I want to accomplish in life was my first day serving on a mobile dental van attending to primarily underserved children in marginalized neighborhoods of our community. My smile was matched only by the children's smile after their treatment was complete and they were returning to playtime with the ordeal over. My sense of fulfillment and profound joy rose from deep within, pervasive in ways I had previously not known possible. Assisting in providing oral health care and treatment to adults in the community on our dental van also delighted me, how happy they were after their teeth were fixed and the confidence resulting from the treatment. Shadowing a local Orthodontist, Dr. XXXX, was another source of confirmation that dentistry was the right choice for me – more amazing smiles and the joy of making people happy and confident. My Palestinian parents were refugees who fled their home to live in Jordan, where I was born. They love to recount how they tried to get me to stop sucking my thumb, putting a bitter Arab root on it so I would kick the habit. I remember the bitter taste even today. However, the bitterroot was no silver bullet, and they even took me to a dentist to help with my thumb sucking, which I later quit on my own. I was more intrigued with dentistry than engaged in my treatment, but this first visit to a dentist made a lasting impression. To be sure, I was experiencing this reassuring connection with a professional who sparked my intrigue. Over time, I realized I wanted to become highly skilled and influential. The hobbies and extracurricular activities I gravitated to during my formative years required solid manual skills and the development of advanced hand-eye coordination. I was enamored with Legos, working on modifiable small-scale R.C. cars, racquet sports, drawing, crocheting, rock climbing, and basketball. I ran a mini barbershop out of my garage in high school, where I used precision and control to yield the perfect cut. I felt immense satisfaction in meticulously using my hands to help my friends look their best and boost confidence. While earning my Bachelor’s Degree in Health Sciences at Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU), in addition to working to pay my expenses, I spent many hours volunteering in the Emergency Room of a local hospital, learning how to develop a variety of approaches to suffering and techniques for consoling patients, especially those who came in because they were suicidal. I learned how to create constructive leadership roles and enjoyed working with our Clinical Research Investigative Studies Program (CRISP) partners. I also volunteered to help promote activities for special needs teens for a program called IMPACT at OSU. With Medical Teams International (MTI)'s Mobile Dental Program, we visited underprivileged areas and rehabilitation centers to provide free dental care. I gained a mentor, Dr. XXXX, who helped me better understand and appreciate dentistry's many ways of being a leader, a teammate, and a friend. Assisting with dental procedures for patients of all ages and backgrounds – their gratitude was uplifting and moving. I also focused on inspiring the children I worked with by encouraging them to pursue their dreams. I kept returning not to accumulate hours but because I enjoyed being an integral part of the dental team, working closely with experienced dentists, and building on my professional relationships. I seek to become a leader in my community and the dental profession, especially concerning my efforts to organize dental missions to my land of origin, the Palestinian territories. I also want to help refugees in America access adequate oral health. Innovative, creative, very environmentally friendly, and most Internet savvy, I look forward to many decades to come harnessing the power of Internet-based and apps technology and social media to increase access and quality of care for the marginalized and underserved in greatest need.
